as most people on the ED board know, i have been a wreck lately recovery-wise. i am barely hanging on. i am one of those people who needs inspration. i need a frequent visual or musical reminder that i will make it when i feel my world is coming undone. initially, i accomplished this with bracelets. i've gone through six. and while i liked all of them, the fact is that it can be difficult being careful with jewelry when you are disabled. you're constantly falling, having to invent new and better ways to get around t5o accomadate your disability, etc. so they all broke. besides, i never really found one that really meant a lot to me, you know? this is why i'm considering a recovery tattoo. my dad is not thrilled with the idea, but he also said it would be between me and god. if i did do it, it would be small, easily concealable, respectful, have a deep personal meaning for me, and in a place where i could see it as often as i wanted. the point of this would be to give myself a permanant, positive, personal, reminder that i am worth the work that it will take to recover. i wouldm't make the reason for the tattoo obvious (no periwinkle NEDA ribbons or be comfortable in your genes tats). i don't want to explain my tattoo to a stranger by saying "i have an eating disorder." besides, i believe a full and complete recovery is possible and achievable because with god all things are possible. after i am fully recovered, i'll still have it, so i still want it to be meaningful after i get well. i want this to be a positive choice, just another step i'm taking in recovery. i will take every precaution to make sure i do not regret this when i'm an old grandma hanging out with the grandkids watching "mary poppin" for the 50 millionth time.
before i do this, i am praying about it, doing my homework concerning cost, pain, etc. this is not something i'm taking lightly. there is an indian ( as in india) beauty kiask in my local mall that does henna tattoos for realitively cheap. a henna tattoo is an indian tattoo that is less permanant. it absorbs into only the top layers of skin and comes off in a couple months. sometimes sooner or later than that, depening on how much ink is used and the size of the art. i had a science teacher who was a very talented artist and always was putting her favorite art on herself with hennas. in a couple of months, i'll look into it. that way, i can get a feel for how it will look and sort of "test drive" having a tattoo.
in the meantime, here are the ideas i've come up with so for tattoos, and what each idea would mean to me...
the last line of "footprints": my all-time favorite poem "when you saw only one set of footprints in the sand, it was then that i carried you" around my wrist. (also thinking about shortening it to just it was then that i carried you", or just maybe a silohette of two footprints on the underside of my right wrist.)
the words "still i rise" in purple in a pretty font on my right wrist. this poem is one of mfavorites and means a lot to me. maya angelou is my favorite poet.http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/still-i-rise/

a purple crown and the word "princess" underneath in purple on one of my wrists or somewhere on my forearm.: i wrote a poem called "princess" about what it means to be a daughter of jesus christ in 2009 before god began dealing with me about EDNOS. i have 108 poems , and "princess" is the only one that has NEVER been edited. it is my favorite poem of mine and means so much to me that my e-mail address is hisprincess63@yahoo.com . "princess" is my 63rd poem.

I am a princess

the words "i'm yours" on the underside of my right wrist: i wrote a poem called "i'm yours (the potter's hand)" about how i am defined by my faith and my commitment to god. i wrote this during one of of my rare moments of clarity while i was lost in relapse at bethel. it was inspired by a chapal in which a pastor and pottery artist brought his wheel and did a sermon about god's divine ordinance over us and how he shapes us. he created pottery during the sermon and the visual illustration really hit home with me. this poem means a lot to me because it was one of the few moments during that time where i was able to write that i am not defined by my ED.
the lyrics "i'm through accepting limits/cause someone says they're so/some things i can not change/ but till i try/i'll never know" from "wicked" in dark green or black on my stomach. i HATE my stomach. it is the part of my body i detest the most. "defying gravity" is my favorite song from my 2nd all time favorite musical "wicked". stephen schwartz is also my all-time favorite stage composer. he is a messiahnic jew (jew for jesus) and has always been frank about including his faith in his work. bonus: he worked for disney and is 1/2 of the musical brains behind "pocahantas", "the hunchback of notre dame", "hercules", "mulan", "brother bear" and "brother bear 2" and a host of other animated and live action disney musical films. with those few lines, stephen schwartz has described my entire life.
the lyrics "it's plain to see if we stick together/you're gonna find a way" from celine dion's "that's the way it is" in blue on my stomach..: celine is my favorite singer. when i was listening to her music one night, three songs jumped out at me; this one, "my love" and "there comes a time". i felt like god was "talking" to me through them. with this song, i felt like god was telling me to never give up,

a charmbracelet tattoo w/ 3 charms-a cross a heart and a treble clef or eigth note in that order around my right wrist-i wrote a song called "jesus, love, and music" in 2009 about the 3 most important things in my life.

I agree with the others; I think it's a good idea to have inspiration in the form of art. Something that brings you joy, happiness, and reminds you to fight. I say GO FOR IT!
