I don't really know much about the medical side of things, someone else might be able to help you out more (a doctor, especially). I do know that people have told me numerous times that it really does not work for getting rid of the calories. By the time it hits your intestines, most of the calories have already been absorbed. The weight (in terms of numbers) you will lose will be mostly water weight, to be gained back very easily.
I do understand the urge to use them. Although I haven't abused them heavily, when I did, it was because of what you said. I wanted to get that empty feeling, and to know that I was actively doing something to get rid of the food.
