Well i would say that your using of food as a comfort has become more bad habit than anything. What happens now is you need to break that habit, which isn't a day at the beach, but very do able. What you need is to firstly be consistent. A diet/program is short term, and lifestyle means long term. So simply, you need to make smart choices and continue to make smart choices instead of easy choices for a prolonged period of time.
It's a struggle at first, only because you're fighting a current bad habit, and you may think that this feeling of difficulty will only get worse as time goes on but in fact, it will be the opposite. After enough time, making smarter, better for you choices will become you're new habit, and will become how you deal with stress in the future.
Not to mention, the better your body feels, the less stress there will be in your life anyway.
I suggest for the beginning of this, to find a new hobby. Something you can turn to in times of boredom or stress to preoccupy your mind, and you never know, maybe that will become a new habit in your life too.
It can be done. Not everyday will be as perfect or stress free as you'd like it to be, but pushing through these imperfect days and being consistent, making good choices everyday, just notice the difference you see and in how you feel in even just a few weeks.
Make smart choices. Be consistent. You'll get there, I'm sure of it. x
I am older too, and have been an emotional eater since I was 10. I try to look at the right things I do - eating veggies and fruit - try for 5 servings a day. Diet soda free days. Stuff like that. I just choose to be kinder to myself - the self abuse just gives me permission to binge and allow the emotional eating. Avacado, almonds, walnuts are great food choices for me - help with the cravings and are nutritious. good luck, and keep writing.
I am just so grateful not to be alone. And I just keep doing the baby steps.
