Hey!!! I'm a teacher!!! I am 25 years old and I teach high school history...talk about having rough "off" days. Sometimes it makes teaching difficult, but to be honest, I can't think of a more selfless profession and being there in front of the clasroom each day reminds me that I MUST be a positive role model for the young women that I teach. I leave school each day feeling happy...its the evenings when I have the most difficult time.

so your allowed to be a teacher if you openly have an ED?

I don't see why having an Ed should keep anyone away from teaching. I would be careful about wearing it on your sleve though. That would be unprofessional

Its just I am at uni in first year studying to be a teacher, I am just scared if i do ask for help they will turn around and say sorry you can't teach in your condition xx

I don't think your ED will keep you from teaching, that would be discrimination. I work in a Youth Service and everybody knows I'm anorexic. You can't talk to your students about it but other than that I wouldn't see a problem.
I read your journal. So you didn't make it without binging and purging. Start again the next day. And why are you afraid of your Dad. Your are 19 years old. Tell him you need your boundaries. If you can't tell him write him a letter. That's what I did with my parents

"Openly" as in what?

The only reason a school you were staffed at would have reason to know would be if you were 1)acting on behaviors on school property 2) needed to ask for time off through Short-Term Disability (you'd have to explain why)

In other words, they provide you with health insurance - but they don't have access to how you use it.

I believe they may be able to ask you take time off to get help, give you a couple of weeks leave, if it got to the point where you were passing out in school, etc.. But I don't believe they'd have the right to fire you, or not hire you, based on a mental illness.

i was a preschool teacher for 6 yrs. i came clean, and my boss and co-workers helped me through it.
