technically I am in recovery, weight wise, on the low end, but the doctor wants 3-4 more pounds, and this terrifies me. that news and all the stress going on has triggered ED big time and I want to restrict again and exercise more. I eat only certain foods at certain times and it is so isolating. ED is always playing games in my mind, making me feel fat, ugly and weak willed. I cant stand it anymore. why is recovery so darn hard to accept and keep up? I think I haven't been able to get over the mind aspect of ED and that is why it still comes back but I don't know what to do. any advice?

Im so sorry to hear that things are going worse again. I know you are a sensible person and this condition you are in has nothing to do with sense. The professionals often want the weight to go on at a "nice steady pace" that exceeds the ED sufferers emotionally capacity to keep up. I see the point in getting the physical side "fixed" but I believe (and others may disagree) that there isnt much point if the person cant handle it emotionally. My advice (perhaps contrary to your doctors) would be to try and relax and be able to enjoy what you eat. Weight gain can be a longer term goal which will be easier to accept as you work with your mind and soul. Do you have the support of a therapist in analyzing your "need" to be thin? (I know - figuring it out doesnt necessarily magically mean you can drop it). Of course I hope you can find enjoyment in eating whatever you eat meanwhile and manage at least not to lose weight. Best Wishes!

I am trying to imagine my life without ED...what would it be like? What opportunities would I have? What would I do with all that extra time and energy? How would I interact with people without this burden looming over me? I want to find these things out...I want to live the life that I am meant to live. I have a lot of weight to regain but I am working with a nutritionist and a therapist and really focusing on the big picture. I have also had to cut out all exercise from my life...this is the hardest thing. I am not always successful but I need to do it. If your doc thinks that you need to add a few pounds then, medically, you must need those pounds and you can do it sensibly. Work with a nutritionist and start adding a few hundred extra calories a day and see what happens. We need to quiet that voice so that we can have full recovery!

I have tried nutrionists but just cant follow them. I only feel "safe" eating the same foods over and over. the extra pounds she wants me to gain is more like a cushion, to get up a bit if I slip. I agree with the fact if emotionally not there it is very hard to get truly in recovery. I only feel comfortable with myself eating the same no matter if I exercise or not, and I have a very physical job. so frustrating. thanks guys!
