A predictor for teachers and specialists is when someone who seems to be intelligent struggles with reading and writing. Our intelligence is what helps us cope or find ways to adapt to our situation, Intelligence. You might find solace in a family member since dyslexia is dominant genetically, so there is a family member who is familiar with your situation.
Everything is going to work out, the friends that have seen you struggle should understand. Trust me when I say if you open up about your learning difficulties you will find you are not alone.

I have the same problem but Im alot older then you but were did you get the equipment for free is there any scolerships or anything like that avaible to you that you are aware of ?

At the moment I go to university in the UK, so they have given me a laptop with softwear to help me read books online, it reads aloud and changes the colour of the screen etc, and a printer to print stuff rather than read it from the screen. Its funded through the government who pay for the equipment and for the univeristy to provide someone to read through my essays. It been really helpful and I struggle a lot less than I used to with this support. When I leave uni I won't get this support but I can keep the equipment. You might me able to get your employer to buy this equipment for your office computer if you work in a big office or company.

A lot of the things that helped were free, especially changing the background font on microsoft from white to light purple/blue, but try it out to find what colour suits you, it helps me read my work on word a lot better.

People call it an excuse when I have trouble reading. Like I go around all the time purposely misreading. They don't get that with computers doing all the spelling and grammar, it is more transparant.

I know what you mean. I was diagnosed when I was a child, but only my friends now know I am LD; but my employers and coworkers don't. You never know what they will act. I have always been afraid of telling them, in fear of being fired. Maybe not off the bat, but I think that every mistake I make will be highlighted in their eyes and they will decide that I am not capable. Of course, hopefully you will get an understanding employer, but I've had teachers who were wonderful until finding out I was LD, and then they became cold and malicious. Maybe while you are at the university, try to learn compensation tools so when you are working you can try to do things on your own with as little aids as possible. Some non-LD people just don't get it. :)

I'm dyscalculic and have been told by math teachers, most of my life, you don't try. I couldn't stand the way they looked at me as though they were disgusted. They never thought I was LD. I even talked to a special education english teacher, about it and what he said was most hurtful. He said "You're so good at english, it's hard to believe you're learning disabled." As if LD is always language based. I was diagnosed at 15 and am in now. It's difficult knowing that I'm not entitled to the same help as others.

now that your diagnosed dont lisen to what people say, saying you cant go to collage or unitversy cuz you can you just need to work a little more ok cuz ive been dealing with people like that sence 3ed gread so keep on moveing and you'll do fine.

wow ur lucky that u were at least formally diagnosed with it i thought i had it then did online test and i got 180 and thats real high my parents don't know that i got it but i have trichotillomania (hair pulling) 2!!!

feel lucky for manny ppl cant seem to efford the equipment thats degined to help ppl for dyslexia also some ppl hide there dyslexia becase its a hassard to there sicuation i hope things are going ok
btw what is the equipment like and how dose it help ? i never relly seen much stuff that can help me only stuff i live off to get by * robot programs doing everything for me on computer*

I got a laptop with equipment that can read text, so it can read aloud websites or online articles and books, they gave me a scanner so i can scan books so they can be convertered into audio. This only really helped a bit, as it is still a length process and did not speed up the time it took me to study but only lengthend it, so i didn't use it.

I also got mindmapping softwear that didn't help. But what really helped was changing the colour of the background on word documents to an off white colour made text a lot easier to read. Also I had a dyslexia tutor to help me with my essays which was really useful.

This happens to me a lot. How smart someone is has nothing to do with them having dyslexia. People seem to have a notion that a dyslexic person can't be smart. We can actually do anything we work at. I actually tell them about famous people that have or historical figures that had dyslexia.

For Families With Little Or No Resources
It is well established that tutoring is a powerful tool in the battle against dyslexia however, by its very nature tutoring is expensive in both time and money, available only where qualified tutors can be found and therefore out of the reach of many families.
So what is a parent to do? I have been evaluating and remediating dyslexics for almost ten years and this question has plagued me to the point where I made it my mission to find or create a effective, efficient and affordable alternative for everyone who has minimal resources.
The result of my quest is a research based program called EduGameStar that is designed to provide any individual with the cognitive and phonological skills that must be in place before someone can be a fluent reader. EduGameStar then teaches the user how to use those skills in order to become a fluent reader. This is all accomplished in a Digital Therapy format that is both fun and highly effective. Thats right we are using video games to provide people of all ages with reading skills and helping them use them.
The Reading & Writing Inst. of Atlanta, has been using this program for some time with dyslexic students overseas and in the United States.
I am now at the point where I would like to offer this unique program to the those dyslexics who cannot obtain traditional help. Toward that end I would like to offer some full and partial scholarships to families in need. I found it very interesting about the color of the computer screen. I have always immediately changed my screen to blue or gray without knowing why. It definitely helps.
