I wasn't ready for this. My relationship with my daughter becomes more and more strained as she doesn't cooperate. Getting her to do anything is a chore, She plops herself down angrily and tells me to go away, not cooperating if I want to bring her into the pool or out for a walk. How do you handle a oppositional child with disability?

BE FIRM. that's what I tell teachers who might not know how to control my son. I find most DS kids respond better when they know YOU are in charge. Speak very firmly and make your demand. Don't "ask" them to do it, "tell" them.

The trick to being firm is not being outright bossy and then it escalates to where it's a shouting match. Our family has worked well with giving options between two activities so he chooses, or setting it up so it's "his idea". People with DS get tired of being told what to do, sometimes they need a break and shutting down is how they achieve it. I know it's tough, but it's possible! Hope things are going better!

Being consistant is the key sometimes samantha dosnt want to do things ,, i do give her options, and explain how i feel if she dose what i ask her ,,, they love to help, and impress you,,, praise is good but definately being firm and stick to your guns...
