Divorce after Twenty years together Community Group
I want to start something for those of us that were married for a long long time. I think that we face a little different issues than those who were dating for a few years or even married for shorter period of time. Being married for so long we have older children some have grandkids dealing with teenagers and their reaction to the divorice empty nesters dating after 40...
the gift that keeps on giving
That's what someone called divorce and it couldn't be more true.
Yesterday was a really hard day for me. DD33 had first grandbaby last month, but lives in Maui (a 10 hour plane ride away). Although the ex and I have been divorced for 10 years...no matter. DD33 created an online album for family since we all live far away and what did I get to see yesterday...that's right...the ex and the other woman (they've been married now for 8 years) there in Maui with my new grandbaby (born last month). He got fired from his high paying job during our divorce in 2007 and married her just 4 months after the divorce was finalized. With her high paying job (she actually worked with the ex for 20 years prior to our divorce) she has supported him ever since. Anyway, oh yes...there was a picture of THEM with my new grandbaby whom I won't get to see until May.
After all this time (10 years), it does still sting...HER having taken my place in the family...seeing HER instead of me there. That was supposed to be MY life, not HERS. Although I have remarried, the dreams of milestone events spent together still make me sad. Plus, my current husband and I aren't financially as well off as they are, so dh refuses to spend "that kind of money" going to see my kids. SO, I go alone. Admittedly, every time I see HER with him with my kids, I just get sad and it hurts. My dh makes decent money, but is frugal by nature and doesn't see going to see my kids as a priority as I do. :( So, I have to see this "happy" family that SHOULD have been MINE. Dh and I don't have a blended family having married when our kids were grown. He has sons with mental issues and mine basically left and moved far away (2 in Maui and one in NYC - me in the midwest). I do have DD29 here, but she has basically estranged herself from the entire family for reasons unknown to any of us.
My day-to-day life is a happy one, but triggers (like seeing THEM as the parents with MY children) cause me pain. I wouldn't wish my life in regards to the brokenness of my family on anyone.
Thanks for listening...

I had gone to the grocery store. When I wheeled my cartback to my car I just stool there a minute. A few spacesaway a Tesla Cyber truck was parked. I had seen it on theroad a few times for a few seconds. But not close up.It looked like it belonged to 2126 and not 2026. I wasgoing to take a picture of the car but the owners cameback and drove away. It was an ordinary middle age...

I have basically given up on Facebook (Fakebook, right?) so I don't see these kinds of things anymore, I don't need any reminders or triggers from social media sources, I get enough of those by my wondering thoughts and memories. Sending you a great big hug!!!!!
I, too, feel very sad about the life milestones we are not enjoying as a couple or family. My ex and I looked forward to becoming grandparents and it makes me incredibly sad not to enjoy this stage of our life together. I see many of my friends who are still married, enjoying their adult children and grandchildren in a way that we never will. I miss us being a family so very much! I also feel replaced by the other woman, now wife. She and my ex are enjoying traveling and living the life that I thought my ex and I would be living. Again, I just try not to think about it and focus on my life and the family and friends who are an important part of my life. I know that for some people, divorce may be a welcome relief from a troubled or unhappy marriage. For me, divorce has been a very unwelcome intruder into my life.
Try not to dwell on your ex/his wife and their role in your grandbaby's life. You are Grandma, not her. Nothing can change that fact. Focus on and enjoy all the times you get to be with your daughter and baby. Find special ways to be a part of your grandchild's life. Look forward to your time in Hawaii with your new grandchild!
Again...thank you all for the wonderful support. Like most of you, everyone I know in real life from family to friends are all enjoying one long term marriage enjoying their adult children and grandchildren TOGETHER. I can't help but envy them. I know it's wrong to envy, but....
