Divorce after Twenty years together Community Group
I want to start something for those of us that were married for a long long time. I think that we face a little different issues than those who were dating for a few years or even married for shorter period of time. Being married for so long we have older children some have grandkids dealing with teenagers and their reaction to the divorice empty nesters dating after 40...
Dh and I have been married almost 4 years and we've had our ups and downs, but we know how lucky we are to have met at our age. Dh had done online dating back in the late 90's and again before we met and boy, the stories he told me. Because he was the first man I dated after my divorce and ended up marrying him, I told him once that maybe I should have dated more! He said no, I was missing nothing. I also had a co-worker who was 55 and did OLD and she almost got scammed twice and met some real losers. So, if you decide to try OLD, be smart and be careful.
That being said, I was on Match for 4 months. Decided to switch to eHarmony-HATED it. I'm back on Match and much prefer it.
There are going to be people who prefer others over match-just look around and take your time. I'm finally ready to date (at 3+ years) and it is good feeling. When I joined the first time in July, I wasn't ready, but it really helped me get ready-know what I want and don't want.
I went on Match and had lots of nice dates before I met my current boyfriend, who I've been dating for about two years. I think I was on it for about 4 or 5 months before I met my bf. HE was on and off for YEARS, and he said he met some nice people, and he met some liars, and he met some weirdos and......hey, it's just like life!
Match is as good a site as any, and I prefer a site where people pay vs. one that is no-cost. I figure there may be less people just looking for hook-ups on the pay sites, but that's just my opinion.
Good luck
There is such a cross section of people, from really nice guys to some really awful ones with absolutely no common decency at all. Serial daters, to normal guys, to those just looking for hookups. But it is a great way to really learn a lot about yourself, and what you do and don't want in a relationship. I have only been on the sites for about a year, and I have learnt so much from it, and regained my self esteem.
You just have to learn to stand your ground, and not put up with things that make you feel uneasy or uncomfortable, and also not take rejection too personally......just remember that the others on there also have history like you do, and so they may be just as uncertain about what they really want too.
As someone else said you have to watch out for scammers. Be very very wary of anyone who is overly enthusiastic about telling their entire life story right off the bat, and then trying to persuade you to communicate via a yahoo email address. They are more often than not scammers who want to sweet talk you and get you hooked into helping them financially because of one sob story or another. Sadly these people love to prey on lonely hearts on dating or support websites. I have had to report several, and they have been banned from the site for being fraudulent members pretending to be someone they aren't.
Good luck, and remember to have some fun with it too.
