Divorce after Twenty years together Community Group
I want to start something for those of us that were married for a long long time. I think that we face a little different issues than those who were dating for a few years or even married for shorter period of time. Being married for so long we have older children some have grandkids dealing with teenagers and their reaction to the divorice empty nesters dating after 40...
did anyone see the movie Fences with Denzel? A portion of it deals with infidelity and it really was kind of heart wrenching but thought-provoking at the same time. I could see the wife's point of view, but for the first time I really could see the reasons why some men (my ex probably included) cheat. The escape from the pressures of home life. The chance to laugh with someone who has no expectations of you other than to enjoy life. I think back on the years when the cheating was occurring, and there was often tension in our home about our teenage daughter and our different opinions on how to parent her. It often ended with my ex and I mad at each other and he felt ineffective and beaten down as a parent and a man. I regret that. I don't condone cheating as a way of dealing with problems or pressures, but I can allow that it might have been the impetus for it even though he was never able to articulate why he did it, while still loving me and our family very much. I know it's water under the bridge now but couldn't help dredging up these thoughts after seeing that movie.

People who were alive during 9/11/2001 have a story of how the attacks on the USA impacted their lives. Feel free to share.....I graduated from law school on Sat, Sep 15, 2001 at age 24. Many families did not attend the graduation ceremony because the airplanes were grounded. I was a law clerk for a certain government agency for two years while in law school and was looking forward to a great...

My second husband and I both have to keep our mouths shut when watching a movie in which cheating is done because, like my ex, he cheated on his first wife for reasons of his own. We feel very differently about cheating, but what my dh DOES know is that if he EVER cheated on ME, I'd be gone and I was very upfront about that BEFORE we married almost 6 years ago.
I do love Denzel Washington, so probably will watch it at some point, but won't pay to see it at a movie.
My ex did not want to grow old and had a hard time making decisions on lifes issues. He always was a procrastinator. His solution...run away to escape. Fences helped to get a wider view on his take on our marriage...again...not that I think it was right.
The movie brought up many topics that applied to my marriage. The wifes solution was interesting. She emotionally checked out as well. As I watched her I was grateful mine ended...I could not see myself living that way but would have to if we stayed together...it would have been a death of a different kind. During the late years of their marriage they lived separate lives..very sad.
Watching her dealing with the emotional fallout was very realistic...I remember it well. I too lived through my ex...put myself last. His successes were mine...his failures were mine. I lost my own hopes and dreams in the process...my mistake. Watching her finally put herself first and pursing her own dreams was awesome to watch. A bit of a light bulb moment for me which I have applied to my present situation. Awesome movie! Big Hugs...Kathy
