Divorce after Twenty years together Community Group
I want to start something for those of us that were married for a long long time. I think that we face a little different issues than those who were dating for a few years or even married for shorter period of time. Being married for so long we have older children some have grandkids dealing with teenagers and their reaction to the divorice empty nesters dating after 40...
So, I'm confused...are you just getting a legal separation or a divorce? Do you have your own retirement? After a long-term marriage (over 20 years), usually everything is divided in half - assets, retirements, investments, etc...unless the 2 parties agree to something else. It's not a law, but that's pretty much the way it works, so the fact that he put most of his 401(k) into his own checking account to buy a house sounds fishy to me. I'd get a good lawyer ASAP and get your ducks in a row.
I agree with you...it sounds like your marriage has too much water under the bridge to go back. Just the fact there IS another OW involved tell me it's time to kick him to the curb and move on to a happier life. You deserve one!

As to startingover's comment about division of assets, IF you live in an equitable distribution state (check www.divorcesource.com) him liquidating his 401k could have an adverse effect on your financial settlement. If you don't already have an attorney, I strongly urge you to get busy TODAY. This is YOUR future we're talking about and you deserve all the protection the law can provide.

Sorry about the doggies.
Just a thought. I started out trying to be fair but quickly realized the ex was using my fairness against me. That could happen to you too.
If you live in the equitable distribution state, I would strongly URGE YOU to FILE FIRST! The mandatory waiting period is for a final divorce decree, but you can go ahead and FILE at ANY TIME!
I also lived in an equitable distribution state and my attorney told me that it's always better to be the Plaintiff than the Respondent! She was absolutely right! I got a great settlement and the X had to eat a lot of crow.

I'm sorry about the dogs. They get so attached to their owner and he obviously doesn't have compassion for them either. I hope you find good homes for them.
I love your in-law family and their response to his idea of bringing his ow to live near them. I don't know how things go between my ex's ow and my in-law family, but my parents-in-law and my sister-in-law rang me especially to say they loved me and wanted to keep in touch with me after I moved out. One BIL is willing to see me occasionally and the other has nothing to do with me. He's been divorced twice and was my ex's go-to guy during the last days of our marriage and through the divorce. My MIL and I shared many a confidence about my ex over the years, because he treated her much the same way he ended up treating me.
When you finally accept that this separation and divorce is actually going to happen, it is a bit scary. Looking down the barrel of living alone and not having someone to "play" with is a bit daunting. However, as time goes by, you get used to living a much happier life and that leads to happier days and new friends. You will be ok. You really don't want to be with someone who doesn't want to be with you. I spent 20 years in that sort of situation and it's horrible. I'm glad I'm away from that daily sadness even if I do live alone.

Do you still work and are you financially stable? If so, that is a huge relief because dealing with financial stress on top of emotional stress is the absolute worst!!!
I may be wrong, but I don't think you mention anywhere in your post that you love him or loved him even before his announcement. hmmm. Perhaps his illness and related neediness dampened your feelings of love for him even then? From the little I know, It sounds like it was tough on both of you.
Even though you are sad and upset, I sense somewhat of an acceptance of what has happened from you. Perhaps this separation/divorce is somewhat of a relief that "it" is finally over...the burden of caring for an ill spouse, the tension from your growing distance with one another, his lies (making emotional connections online), your hiding the amount you were drinking....ALL of it! It was tough.
I guess where I'm going with this is...perhaps you'll begin or are already are beginning to feel a weight lift off of your shoulders. Of course it's hard, you've spent most of your life with this man, it's the life you've known and dysfunctional or not, the life we know is always more comfortable in the present then the unknown future.
I sense that you're going to be just fine. Alone? Heck, you WERE alone honey. You took care of your family (just him and you and the dogs I'm guessing as no kids mentioned) all by yourself. You were a good wife in that you took care of him in 'the bad times' which is what we're supposed to do in marriage. But it didn't save things. And that's okay. You're going to be okay. You must have an incredible determination, it's what's kept you going all these years, and now...well it's all going to be directed at taking care of you FIRST. Now that's a concept worth investing in!
Keep us posted how you're doing and sending you hugs of support!
p.s. good luck with the dogs..it you can't handle it, then don't! You cared for your husband all those years, and if the dogs are a burden, then let them go. You have options and don't feel guilty if you need to let them go!
He had his own business on the property so while I was at work he had plenty of time to call and text OW. I closed the business at the end of last year since he was packing to leave. Yes, I was his accountant, too.
We have no children, but 5 dogs. I'm having him take the dogs since he left me with enough responsibility while he had none. The OW is supporting him as I did. Ha! I did everything for him while he was sick and before. I cared for him and about him but it wasn't enough for him, I guess. I have good friends and family and they are helping a lot. I have 4 acres to take care of and found someone, through another divorced woman who has a small horse farm, to help with the heavy lifting. I just want all the shit to be over: separation, divorce and I will eventually sell this house for something more manageable.
