Diverticulitis Support Group
Diverticulitis is a common disease of the bowel, in particular the large intestine. Diverticulitis develops from diverticulosis, which involves the formation of pouches on the outside of the colon. Diverticulitis results if one of these diverticula becomes inflamed. Diverticulitis most often affects middle-aged and elderly persons, though it can strike younger patients as...
Newly Diagnosed, but mine is on my right side.

Do any of you have issues on your right side? I know from reading this is not as common, but I seem to have problems all over my colon. It started 2 weeks ago initially as loss of appetite for me, and not having an urge to urinate. They put a catheter in me, and sent me home from the ER. Then the constipation started, which for me is VERY odd. I am one who has constant diarrhea pretty much. When I went to my Urologist to get the catheter removed he told me to see my PCP asap about the constipation issue and he explained to me how the bladder and the colon are right there together and if one is out of whack it can affect the other.
I went to my PCP Thur. morning. She pushed around all over my tummy, including my bladder and uterus and ovaries. My Uterus is VERY sore, which is another concerning issue for me now as well after receiving my diagnosis and reading up on fistulas.
I had to do a urine sample. I still have blood in my urine 5 days out after being on cipro, and I have bilirubin in my urine as well. She had me to go to their in house lab to get blood drawn, and those results won't be in until Mon-Tues this coming up week. I won't know what my liver enzymes are until then. My blood is also very thin right now as well, which is very odd for me.
My Dr also sends me to the hospital next door to get CT of my abdomen/Pelvis with contrast stat. I of course had to drink that nasty bitter tasting stuff, and wait an hour to get the ct scan. Well my CT scan showed a lot of inflammation of my colon, and my Dr. has my diagnois as diverticulitis. Since I am already on cipro and had been for 5 days at that time, she also called me in a prescription for flagyl.
I will say that so far I do not feel any better. I am still not eating, and I am pretty weak. I have lost 15 lbs, and my belly is bloated. My indigestion is horrible. I already have GERD as it is, but this is just awful. The acids are so bad that I can hear sizzling in my mouth at times like those pop rocks I use to eat as a kid. She put me on this time released med for my GERD called dexilant, but I am not noticing any difference.
My worst pain is on my right side, but I do also have mid upper pain and left side pain as well. I also have pain under my ribs on my right, which is more like a dull ache so I am not sure if that is my liver or not. This just came down on me like a ton of bricks 2 weeks ago. I honestly do not know how much longer I can go on like this. I have nausea 24 and 7. Not vomiting, but being nauseated all of the time to me is just as bad. Last night I had a teeny tiny bit of diarrhea. I mean just a teeny bit, which is nothing when you think about the fact that I have not had a bowel movement in 9 days when I normally go atleast 3 times a day, and it was yellow. I read online that it's a sign of something with my liver as well. I do not know if issues with the diverticulitis can mess with my liver or other forms of IBS such as ulcerative colitis can mess with my liver. I am new to this, so I am still learning.
I do know that if by Sunday, and I am not eating any better I am going back to the ER. I also have hypoglycemia. I can't keep going like this. I try my best to get calories into my body even if it's just a popsickle.

I don't know what to say to you except I hope you feel better soon and I'll be praying for you. I would definitely go to the ER again on Sunday and I hope you get some answers. And yes, I do get the pains on my right side.

I now wonder how long I have had this. My Mom would always tell me my constant diarrhea was from having my gallbladder removed. My PCP told me that no, it's not normal. I have had numerous accidents because I sometimes can't make it to the restroom in time. I do know that these issues did not start until I had my gallbladder taken out. I had it removed, due to having so many stones.

Doesn't colitis cause diarrhea? Also, I know that just plain irritable bowel syndrome can cause the "having to get to the bathroom instantly" episodes. Have you tried a probiotic? Align works really good.

It does, but going by the CT scan that I had this past Thur my Dr. said that I have diverticulitis right now. I am in pain and right now I am running a low grade fever. It does not seem so far that the cipro/flagyl are doing the job. I have been on cipro for 7 days now, and the flagyl for 4 days. I was already on cipro for a kidney infection, but when I got the diverticulitis diagnosis my PCP added the flagyl. They told me once I get over this, I need to get a colonoscopy. Right now I do not know what to do, because the pain is worse and the fever comes and goes. I worry about an abcess.
