The reason that I am not recommending coming clean with the gastro about everything is because if that doctor puts a note in your chart that tags you as someone who lied in order to get the surgery, it could potentially have huge ramifications for you in the future. So I think you need to be really careful about dealing with that part of it. In general, I think it is a good idea to be honest with your doctors, but I would be very concerned about potential future harm to you over this. Like what if you get dropped as a patient and then have trouble getting medical care from another provider? What if this information follows you for the rest of your life in your medical and insurance records? Proceed very cautiously. Your therapist is different because she is covered by confidentiality, but even there, review how the confidentiality rules work in your state with her BEFORE you start talking.
