What DOES increase your metabolism long-term is to build muscle -- especially your core muscles and larger muscle groups like legs. You don't have to bulk up, just tighten and tone. Do light weight dumbbells for some back/shoulder work, while sitting on an exercise ball -- and do many ab exercises on the ball as well. The more lean muscle you have, the faster your metabolism will run while exercising AND at rest. Also, your metabolism will continue to rev for a couple of hours after strength training, whereas cardio exercise burns calories while you're doing it and then your metabolism goes back to its baseline state pretty quickly. Hope this helps!
