I don't. However I am on a Prednisone Taper for 7 more days and I hit a high 351 yesterday evening. I have increased my Insulin both day and night shots.

With your history I am not surprised. I know a lot of people on Steroids and they are not Diabetic. I guess if you are prone to diabetes and are on Steroids it will fester. Just my opinion.

I know the prednisone can cause high numbers and you have to watch, have you mentioned this to doctor? do keep an eye on this and let them know if you go too high

I also was blessed with diabetes from family history, runs pretty good thru my family

Years of prednisone use at fairly high dosages is probably the cause of my T2, plus I also have a family history. I just have to be extra-vigilant when taking it. I haven't taken it in about a year, my longest stretch without in many years!

My muscle disease all but guarantees that I'll have prednisone in my future. So, I'm looking into insulin via the pen.

Hi Buttercup. I think that might be my problem although I haven't "officially" been diagnosed as DM2. Doctor told me I "might" be insulin resistant and put me on a vitamin with vanadium in it and also Losartan to control hypertension. I gained about 10lbs after going for steroid shots 5 times in 2 years for my spinal stenosis. Ever since then, I feel "unwell"...tired, fat, sluggish;;;especially after any carbs or sweets. Types 1 and 2 run in my family. My doctor KNOWS this yet all he's done is watch my fasting sugars and cholesterol (which is now lowered from 234 to 214) All my other triglyc. are healthy range. I keep begging for an A1C test but he says not necessary since my fasting sugars range from 82-87. Still, I try as hard as I can to live like a diabetic since I feel like one. When I stay away from flours and sugars, I feel a little better. I don't know what's wrong but I feel like they're missing something. Back to your query...yes...I think steroids are partly responsible for throwing people into diabetes.

I was just diagnosed a few day's ago with T2 and the doctors say it is from the steroids I take for my chemo. I do not take Prednisone ( I don't do well with it at all ) I take Decadron. I have no family history of Diabetes on either side. I am taking pills instead of shots and they think it will go away when I am no longer taking the steroids and they are out of my system. I really miss sugar. : )

Stit60-- I just found out that my diabetes can stand up to 15mg of Prednisone without going bananas. If I go any higher, I must eat only very low or no carb foods. And that is hard for me, cause the menu gets very boring and tastless. Currently I'm on 10mg Prednisone with a noon Novolog 6 units shot and a Levemir 12 units shot @ 8pm.

ShannonMo-- Try substituting Splenda for real sugar. I find my blood sugar doesn't rise very high when I eat Splenda dessert items. I don't really like Equal, but I do recommend it for liquids.

Kitty--after reading what you are on, I'm wondering again if I'm wrong about the cause of my "sugar intolerance" and fatigue. I haven't had any steroids in 3 years. I'm 53. Maybe I'm just getting older...

Sounds like you need to be tested for something other than diabetes.

Hi Buttercup! Yes, prednisone was a big factor in my diabetes2. About 14 years ago, I started having a lot of respiratory illness, chronic asthma. After being prescribed massive doses of steroids, which was a huge part of the reason I gained weight, I was diagnosed with diabetes2 a couple years ago. Also, it is in my genetics, so I feel I was a bit doomed.

According to what one of my Drs told me, the prednisone effects the adrenal glands. He also said that many times it effects our metabolism, basically turning it off like a light switch. Which can create weight gain. My weight almost doubled in the last decade. Although, I'm slowly losing the weight, my diabetes is not improving as quickly as I would like.

Fortunately, I was prescribed Advair for the asthma which has lessened my need for the prednisone. But when I have to take it, I've noticed my sugar numbers increase big time. During those times I have to take prednisone, I'm more vigilant about my diet to try and keep the numbers down. Mainly I watch my carbs better.

I was just diagnosed with Type 2. I had taken a metradose pack for carpel tunnel syndrome. Then a steroid shot in the hand. My levels fluctuated between 165- 200. My glucose level went from 6.9 to 7.9 from Sept to May. I am now on Metformin 500 mg extended release. I really think my diabetes is from the steroids. I plan to talk to my dr at the next visit.

would do you do for the gastroparesis, what were your symtoms

Well I hope this doesn't pertain to predisonal eye drops as well as my
fiance is having cataract surgery and having to use them in addition to 2 other eye drops! Anyone here had cataract surgery?
