I normally take 5 units of Novolog right before meals (if my b/s is above 60). I also take Lantus (40 units) at night.
I almost mistakenly took 40 units of Novolog one night as the two bottles are the same size and stored in the same area. What would have happened if I mistakenly took the wrong insulin?

My question may have been confusing so I'll clarify:
What would happen if I took 40 units of the Novolog instead of the prescribed 5 units?

If you Novolog is fast acting like mine you would have needed to eat something right away, I take 10 units before 2 of my biggest meals, I imagine you would have had to watch for a really low blood sugar dip. I am not sure on the sliding scale novalog though.

Get a permanent marker and mark those bottles!!

You would have most likely went really low, then your liver would have tried to fix the problem. Being you had no Lantus AM number would have been off all day long.
For me a low that would cause I would be real fun to be near either nice or mean. You would been allowed to eat a lot of food but most likely not enjoyed it being I never enjoy eating for treating a low. I know my pens were different colors are the vials closer in looks. With the pens the Lantus is a gey pen and novo log is blue big difference in looks.

You most likely would of have one of the worst lows in your life. If you are using the vials, I keep mine in the box. Lantus has purple and Novolog red/orange markings on the outside. Try storing them in different areas.

I take Novolog pre meal based on my bg and how many carbs I am eating with each meal so it changes with each meal. I also was taking 45 units of Lantus each morning, but this morning my bg was low so I only took 30 units and sent my endo nurse an email to find out if I should take the other 15 units. I am on Prednisone fo my bg is all over the place.

I also use the pen so it is easier not to mix them up. I did take too much Novolog once but I didn't have any problems. I just ate more food.

I've done that twice before. The first time my two grown sons were hysterical, it scared them so bad. I called Poison Control Center and their nurse talked me through it. It was several hours of eat, eat, eat, and test, test, test. It is serious mistake to make. My endo (after the second time) put me on the pens and I haven't mixed them up since (over a year). By the way, try keeping the vials in two separate places.
