Hi All!

I was Dxed with Type II the first week in March while in hospital for 10 days for a DVT in one leg and clots in both lungs. After the Docs s got me stable they sent me home taking 500mg of Metformin twice a day. My skin has gotten thinner and thinner, bruises easily, is wrinkled and normal scratches take forever to heal. I take Xarelto blood thinner for the DVT.

Is this paper thin skin a normal diabetes thing? I have gotten my blood glucose from 300+ down to around high 90's - low 100s in mornings by healthy diet and exercise. Any helpful advice on my paper thin skin? Will it get better with my BG under good control?

I don't think so Dale, just in the past year my skin has gotten thin. I ask the Doc and he said it was from some of the other Meds I was on (Oxygen, COPD) and the fact that I had dry skin and of course as we grow older it thins.

Not to infer you are old dear, but I am...LOL

Congrats on the BG numbers. I have not experienced what you described...although I do notice the need to moisturize (dry hands, feet, face) and exfoliate more often.

Thanks all. Grannie.I DO also have COPD (11 years now) and have been on partial O2 therapy for about a year. I am 65. I rub Gold Bond Diabetic cream on my hands, arms and legs. A special diabetic foot cream for my very painful feet.

we all have thinning skin, even some hair loss is expected.. and with taking blood thinner will make things even worse

blood thinners can cause some leakage of blood from vessels if the blood get too thin, which will look like bruises. Please tell your doctor of this, as they need to carefully monitor people using blood thinners. Was the thrombosis in a leg? Are you using also other measures to prevent reoccurrences? like compression stockings, and exercise. I also lay on my back and put my legs up against the wall for 15 minutes a day to help the blood that has pooled in my legs to get back to my torso and circulate.

About your metformin. I hope you have the kind that does not stink. When you open the bottle do you smell anything?

You bs numbers are great. You don't want to get any lower than that.

oh I just read back, and you did say deep vein thrombosis on one leg and clots in your lungs.

Wrinkly skin is sometimes dehydration, so make sure you take in plenty of fluids.

Slow healing is part of diabetes. You don't say here what your A1c is, but things can improve as you continue to keep it under 7.

Do you have other conditions besides the diabetes that could cause some of these things?

I take Xarelto as a blood thinner. Warfarin therapy did not work for me.
Yes, I have another condition-COPD for 11 years. I am on low dose O2 when walking, doing my 1 hour per day exercises and sleeping.

My 500mg Metformin has no odor or smell to it. Tastes terrible in my mouth. I just turned 65 and will have my first A1c in 3 weeks.

Do you do any exercises that are for seniors and those confined to chairs and limited activity?

Yes! I exercise faithfully one hour every day. I have duplicated at home, the equipment and things I used during two months of hospital rehab for my clotted leg and both lungs. A quality treadmill, dumb bells of various weights, stretch resistance bands and resistance chords, a large ball and ankle weights. I could not afford the treadmill Plus the bike machine so I purchased the portable bike machine you can use sitting in any chair or on the sofa. Thanks-Dale

a few years ago and found nothing but a bunch

I am curious if this is saying that Oxygen makes the blood sugar go down since my mom needs Oxygen and she had a higher than I wanted it to be although I am not saying she's diabetic. Thank-you for any comments, it's very good to hear that you have had your numbers coming down from over 300 to down to nearly 100, Praise God!
