Diabetes Type 2 Support Group
Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood, and can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes and organ damage...
I don't know if your morning blood sugar level is related to the food you had the day before. Hopefully someone with more information than I can confirm this or not.
Did you test last night after you had dinner? If so, what was your blood sugar level last night?
Did you skip breakfast yesterday morning? It looks like you only had the grapes with walnuts for breakfast. I am pretty sure you are going to need something more than that for your morning carbs (but again, I will defer to anyone with more experience about this).
I am not a doctor, but I am pretty sure that diabetics really should NOT have a hamburger with fries for lunch. As a matter of fact, I don't think ANYBODY should have a hamburger and fries for lunch.
For dinner chicken curry could be ok, but there are all types of curries. Was it a water based curry, or a coconut milk based curry? Did you have just one wheat tortilla or more than one?
Aside from the grapes in the morning, did you not have any fruits or vegetables yesterday? I think for a healthy diet we are all supposed to have 5 servings of vegetables a day.
You also probably had a minimal amount of fiber - maybe only one or two grams in the wheat tortilla. The ADA recommends 50 grams a day.
Also, what medication are you taking? Did you remember to take it yesterday?
And did you exercise?
And what did you DRINK yesterday? We should drink lots of water (don't know the exact amount).
Again, I don't THINK this will affect your morning blood sugar numbers, but I really, really hope someone else will chime in.
And one last thing; if you are new to this like I am, I think it would be a REALLY GOOD idea to test twice after each meal - especially if it is something like a hamburger or chicken curry. I am now testing one hour after eating and at two hours after eating.
Depending on the type of food, my blood sugar tends to peak at about one hour after eating. Doctors want to know if our blood sugar stabilizes two hours after eating, so that is why a test a second time.
Hope this helps.
139 for me, so feel not bad....and if you were to see one of my super salads....lol....and then the IC in the evening...
What were your numbers 2 hours after breakfast ?
50 grams ?
Seems like alot...but it is necessary to slow down the carbs into sugar event...
IMO, the hamburger, just plain h-burger, is fine...and then, to this we add fries, a shake, sugar and more sugar ,and the bun...
WOW !!!
the grapes i had was at midnight with walnuts .and for 2 days i havent done any xcersise .
i am 5 11 and 241 lbs when i started i was at 246 lbs so i have lost about 5 lbs .
whata re the examples of fiber .still confused about that .
All you ever wanted to know abour fiber and more.
I Googled "fiber".
As for fiber, I just think of it as the stuff that makes vegetables (and fruits) chewy. That is probably NOT the correct scientific definition, but it works for me.
Here's a chart that list the fiber content of many foods:
http://www.wehealny.org/healthinfo/dietaryfiber/fibercontentchart.html
and this page has a list of foods that are specifically low in carbs and high in fiber:
http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/nutrition/a/fibercounts.htm
You probably noticed that hamburgers are NOT listed in the high fiber foods chart. Meat has almost NO fiber. Red meat has lots of saturated fat and cholesterol. Having a low carb / low fat / high fiber diet is going to be the easiest way to lose pounds for most people.
Please note that the American Diabetes Association recommends that diabetics get 50 grams of carbohydrates per day. That would be something like 15 apples a day, so realistically, we will have to take supplements to reach that amount.
Another thing that I have been told by usually reliable sources is that fiber "offsets" the carbohydrates in food. This is good because as a diabetic, we are supposed to be counting carbohydrates.
For example; if a slice of bread has 15 grams of carbohydrates, and then it lists that it has 5 grams of fiber, you can subtract the 5 grams of fiber from the 15 total grams of carbohydrates, Thus, that slice of bread has only 10 grams of carbohydrates that you need to worry about.
Again, this is what I have heard from a couple of different places, so TALK WITH YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT THIS FIRST before following this advice.
161 @ 5:45 this morn.
The super salad is too much; it has grown like the federal budget deficit.
We should be eating 5 meals per day, not just 3 (I was on 2 !) before I became serious abut controlling diabetes.
The responses here are excellent, most helpful.
ARRGGHHH!!! I meant 50 grams of FIBER per day!!!
Thanks so much AmDK for pointing that out. Also, you get bonus points for being able to keep awake during my rather long post. :)
Many of us will test at night and from there you can see the difference and realize it is not what you ate the previous day affecting the morning numbers....unless you are extremely high at night (as I was when mine ran amuck - went to bed at 987 and woke to 882 per doctor so guess I was coming down lol)
