I take Metformin and had the horrible stomach distress for about 3 months. It is much better after that and has worked to keep my blood sugar very stable along with diet and exercise. If you can get through the GI problems it gets better.

I just started taking metformin 250mg with each meal along with amaryl 2mg in morning after successfully controlling blood sugar for 3 years just with low carb lifestyle. Now I know why they call diabetes a progressive disease --don't eat any carbs or sugar but my sugar #s kept rising recently especially at waking up.--frustrated--

orrange , are you a doctor?, if so whawt do you think of avandia. I take 4 mlgs twice daily andit is controling my levels. I went from 13 to 6.7 on that 3 month average rang of blood sugar levels . I for get the name of the test , butim sure you know what im takling about Metformin upset my stomach sooooo bad. Thanks

I have had no side effecrs with metformin, I was told to take it before meals, breakfast and dinner.I hear others here say that take it after. Is this correct?

Hi I was given Metformin when I was first diagnosed but had horrible stomach pains and diarrohea, so my gp put me on a 24 hour release metformin (glucophage) and have had no problems

I believe Met is for reducing insulin resistance, especially in muscle cells. A dosage of 500mg at breakfast and dinner brought my gl of 306 to down below 200 after just one week.

My fasting now is about in the 100's and post prandial seldom spikes higher than 130.

Met helps me to stablize my bg tremedously and I sometimes take $250 if I have a big lunch. It is a slow reacting drug, and the only side effect I have is a dry cough.

The most helpful information came from ADA mb and one of its members mentioned walking after each meal, and this is what I am going after every meal.

I'm on Met 500 bid w/meals and it has reduced the amount of insulin I have to take.

I am on 1000 mg of Metformin 2x a day. Breakfast and lunch take it after my meal. For 2 years I was on 500 mg 2 day but my previous doctor didn't tel me to take it after meals ~ very important ~ so I experienced bowel problems but now I am fine. Blood sugars are great.

I am also on
5mg of Glipize 2x a day
and Byetta which I love have made the biggest difference in my health. I have lost 18 pounds since June.

i started on metformin...then actos was added...then lantus was added.i'm now on actoplus met-2x/day-decreased from 3x/day...and lantus still...no side effects from the metformin,tho! trish

I am on 1500mg of metformin, 40mg of glipizide and 4mg of avandia. I have no problem with any of the meds. I make sure I take them with food, and I space them out over the course of the day. My blood sugars run 70mg to 90mg. In fact anything over 100 is high for me. Even with my muskulo-skeletal problems I try to stay as active as possible. I also take a mutivitamin specifically for diabetics, along with 400mg of malic acid and B vitamins.
