Diabetes Type 2 Support Group
Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood, and can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes and organ damage...

''Philjam.---- stay away from regular sodas, they have more carbs than an allowed amount for a meal, even the juices are loaded...try coke zero/pepsi zero, the taste is not bad no after taste.
Watch your carbs, try to average about 30-45 carbs a meal and about 20 for a snack. the main thing is watch PORTION CONTROL...make substitutions no fried try baked or broiled. no white breads, pasta (except Dreamfield brand)potatoes, rice. the starches in these items can hold the numbers up higher longer.
Try whole wheat light version of bread, sweet potatoes, veggies and even fruits in smaller portions.
Can you have icecream or cake? yes once in a while smaller portions, look for ice cream that has 1/2 sugars, try frozen yogurts, look for carbs per serving at around 19 or so, there are plenty.
And remember to count those carbs of the sweets in with your daily count.
Thank you so much! I am sitting here after finishing my first steak since being diagnosed on 1/7. It has not been too difficult so far, the metformin appears to be working because my sugars have ranged from 95 to 133. I believe that I may suffer from the 'Dawn Effect' because my night time sugar before sleeping has been around 114 and then I wake up with a 133, while fasting. I am thankful for the existence of this support group and am gaining a lot of first-hand information about this disease. I had not purchased any soda yet and will check out the Coke Zero you suggested, but I did dilute 4 ounces of cran-grape/sprite mixture too 16 ounces with water tonight. It is actually the first thing I have drank other than water with a meal since the 7th. I will heed your advice on the 40-50 carbs/meal. I know that the soda is around 40 carbs per cup so I figure I only took about 20 with this meal. I have yet not eaten any rice or potatoes but now that the initial shock is wearing off and I am seeing that my sugar has stabilized pretty well I will try some moderate starch consumption. I know that the soda is probably what had my sugar so high in the first place and just eliminating it has resulted in much lower fasting numbers. Again thank you so much!
Do stay away from the high fructose drinks, they can make up your whole meal allowance...but with common sense in choosing foods you can do this and don't forget some daily exercise, this also helps control the numbers and its healthy for you
