Diabetes Type 2 Support Group
Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood, and can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes and organ damage...

That is just my opinion. I do know my friend was a Type 1 Diabetic and she was an alcoholic, she drank instead of eating, her blood sugar dropped to 30, she lived alone, went into a coma an died she was 59 years old.
Exercise, proper diet and positive outlook of life can keep blood sugars in control.
Also have you tried to get to the root of the problem of alcoholism... Like what are the things which has led your better half to such things.
My dad had a similar problem with being an alcoholic and living a lazy life style (watching tv all day). His problem was depression due to family problems, lack of enthusiasm in everyday things. And he never wanted to seek medical help...
He suffered for that.
Keep posting and talking :)
