OK, my sister's wedding is coming up next month. I really don't like gatherings or parties. When I was younger and got dragged to them by my parents there was one place you could find me, the host's bedroom. I got tired being there and slept through the party. So, when the day comes,I plan to attend the ceremony, get something to eat at the reception and then leave right away. I'm not staying for cake or photos, talking with relatives I haven't seen in decades, etc. I just want to get out of there as quickly as possible.

Personally, I would send ups gift and card with my regrets. Why even go if it so painful and difficult? Anyway, that is not your question. It is never rude to take really good care of you. So my opinion, for what it is worth, is that you are perfectly within good manners to do as you are planning to do. Just keep an open mind and heart for the matter, and you could be surprised by Joy. It often happens!!!

my honest opinion and advice.

talk to your sister about your plans and tell her that you don't want her to think you don't care about her. that you do.

as long as she understands, it won't be a big deal.

and, have fun, you never know. and i'd get her a NICE gift. compensation....(joke).

i agree with elena... i hope she understands... i often think "would this be rude?" but i find that if i talk to the person who i "might" offend BEFORE the event and explain, they are always understanding...

If you can cope with it, see her before for some family photos at home and do the ceremony. Then grab a slice of cake and some snacks off of the bufet, a bag of sugared almonds and a helium balloon to make funny voices with later, and run for the hills.

I wish I could have done that at my own wedding. Apart from the sugared almonds. They can crack your damn teeth.

I tell people openly that I am not comfortable at occasions like that......

its part of my personality, so if I show up and stay for more than 5 minutes they are hella flattered

I think SA nailed it, talk to your sister before the fact. She is family, and if anybody should understand your reasons for not liking family gatherings, she should be one of them!

You can arrive late for the wedding, sit in the back if you like, take a long detour going to the reception, snag some goodies, and then leave early.
