I detest getting up in the dark, so I put a timer on a bedroom light...it goes on before my alarm goes off at 5, and I have found that waking in a lighted room makes me less annoyed by to having to get out of bed.

that is a good idea.. My problem is not the dark really or maybe it is.. I sleep with a tv on as I cant sleep without it so there is always a light on and noise... Im just finding it real hard to push myself up.. and I would be lost if I didnt have this job.. I missed three days of work last week.. Depression hits me hard during the fall and winter months and holidays... I have to fight this shit..

I have a dog who needs walking, so I get up. Also my wife gets up early, so that combination seems to work for me.

God knows that I feel like going back to bed today though, ...

Im so sorry it's so hard for you beastie :( As I find not necessairly the holidays to be a good time for me but just the winter months make it easier for me to move, think. I associate it I guess with crispness, that snap in the cold, movin to stay warm. I also spend money more in the winter time, for things that make me feel cozy, warm, pampered, special when the weather is cold outside.
I can maybe only suggest that now they have these electric small fireplaces and set one up in your bedroom, they look like a regular heater but have the *flames* that look real but really aren't. Im tryin beastie, Im tryin to think of some ways....

I often wanted to stay home during the hellish summer months, I dreaded walking several miles to work in the 117degree heat. What motivated me was the knowledge that if I didn't do it - I would be homeless in under a week. I live in a pay-by-the-week motel room and if I miss a day of work they will throw my stuff out on the sidewalk. So I get up and go, no matter how painful it is.

Tho I will add that now the weather is turning nice out it is much easier to get to and from work. The weather should be good for the next 6 months now.

meandthebeast, At 105 you deserve to stay in bed LOL. Being around people at work distracts me from the depression so getting up and out is part of it. I'm in Australia so we are now in spring my favourite time of the year not too hot and not to cold so I suppose I don't have an excuse at the moment.

beasty,,, you've got fibro, you know that's going to have an affect on trying to get up. I have zero advice though because I can't get unstiff in a short amount of time but caffeine does help some. I know it sucks and I feel for ya. Hugs

I think when there's no one else to work for but yourself, it's hard to find reason to do it with depression.

I've been ill for the last few days. I didn't feel like doing anything, but made myself get up and do what needed to be done because my kids are counting on me. It's a little bit different when the kids are grown and self-sufficient.

I used to cook for the whole house and make meals every night. My daughter is a picky eater and now that it's just me and her at home full time, I hardly cook. I don't feel like putting in 1.5 hours just to make a meal for me.

I can relate. the only time i get up on time is when its really sunny out side. I hate mornings. I get up for work and am useually late. i force myself up because being surrounded by people is better for me than being on my own in my own thoughts all day. getting up is always a battle for me when im feeling particularly low. i usually use my laziness against myself and go over what would happen if i didn't get up. work would call and call and my flatmates would worry people would try get me up im guessing eventually people would try to "help" me and i'd end up in some councilors office trying to explain that i was just tired... not that ive thought about it

What a great question! Based on what everyone else is saying, it sounds to me like the cost of NOT getting up has to exceed the reward of staying in bed. This is a huge issue for me, too, so maybe this is a new path for each of us to explore. Intellectually, I *know* getting up will make me feel better, but that isn't really compelling when the pillows are soft and the bed is safe and warm.
