Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
And change your screen name. Calling yourself hurtful names won't help you either. Now is the time to treat yourself well, not beat up on yourself.
I did not say that I thought suicide was selfish..that was the topic of the thread. It just struck a chord with me when someone had previously commented that those left behind are the ones who are selfish, I think there are family/friends etc who try very hard to help and I do know there are those who have no one and have family/friends who are not their for them.I did not mean to diminish their pain whatsoever..i have alot of compassion for anyone feeling that much pain and anguish and wish that no one felt that alone in such a dark place.
So........try to follow my twisted logic. He's dead. Gone. Nada. No more pain. I'm stuck here, feeling miserable because of his action. I can't get rid of the miserable feeling. It's with me for good. Did he ask me if he could change my life so profoundly? No. Would I have allowed him to, if he had asked? No. Did he know this? Yes! Hence, a selfish act, not taking into consideration how I have to deal with this for the rest of MY life. I know you'll twist this to make me look like the selfish one, but it makes sense in my warped little world.
My 2 cents... Although sad and tragic, it is not a selfish act to me. One would have to be rational to premeditate selfishness to others and unfortunately, you are not thinking of others or yourself when you are attempting it. Planning and all are just symptoms (warnings?) before the act but the act itself I imagine is impulsive and born out of desparation that there is no end in site. Logic and clear thinking are no longer present as to the cause and effects on people that know us. What I would still argue is that many of us like and care about you on here and if that is true, just by shear statistics, there has to be good people in your area as well. As hard as it is to face, there must be some perception in how you view your surroundings that needs changed.
Now, if you really want to get things stirred up, selfish is not the word that pisses me off. It is when they call it a "cowardly act". An assumption that you were too weak to and cowardly to handle life with no respect for the suffering endured. In my opinion, it is a jealous justification for them to keep living life with no compassion for others. In any event, I hope you hang around with us for years to come, buddy. -=SB=-
I have heard one particular person say in an angry way that "anyone who commits suicide is simply selfish".
I think what needs to be said is that when a person commits suicide that it can have a profound life impact on those that they leave behind.
To say that a person would do this for sherely selfish reasons, I believe is inaccurate.
People who kill themselves, in my experience do so because they can either not withstand the pain, hopeless and other emotions
that they are experiencing and see no other options.
Some people do it out of extreme shame or humiliation.
I think that a compassionate way to express the "selfishness" issue might be to say that
suicide can leave those that are left behind feeling traumatized, bereaved and in some cases guilty and forever scarred.
However, interestingly enough, years ago, I did hear
and older woman express relief that her son had finally
killed himself because he was so tormented by drugs and
alcohol which led to incarceration, depression etc...
At the time, I was young and my jaw just dropped.
It was hard to understand but I guess she either felt relieved from knowing that he wasn't in pain anymore and/ or that she was free from the ongoing humiliation and chaos that
he was causing her family.
Just my thoughts on the subject.
I read a really interesting book written by a medium who had communication with like 16 spirits who all had committed suicide. Every single one said they regretted it. Party because they now understand that they still basically have to deal with same problems that they had when they were alive but can't work on them as well in spirit form and cannot go back and change things...and also because they could genuinely FEEL the pain, hurt and suffering that they caused others. That book really affected my thinking.
Stay with us please!!
Two weeks ago I took sleeping pills and drank a bottle of wine. I just wanted to go to sleep and stop the pain that is constantly going on in my head and in my body.My niece called my son to tell him I wouldn't answer the door and I ended up going to the hospital in an ambulance. I felt very horrible the next day. My son wouldn't even pick me up from the hospital. Both my kids called me selfish for trying to kill myself and that I only think of myself. Now my grandkids aren't allowed to speak to me and I can't see them. It's hard for me to understand why they are so angry at me yet won't even communicate with me. If this is truly how they feel, why are they so upset if I want to die? They are the only reason I'm here and yet where are they when I need them most? I think they are the selfish ones for "punishing" me this way. I went to the doctor and now I'm taking Prozac. We will see what happens. Personally, I think the best way to handle this is to live your life. Forget them and go forward and make a new life for yourself.
