Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
If they asked me to elaborate, I would say "The reasons are personal.".
"I had a serious bout of depression but I got treatment for it and am now ready to come back to work."
It is actually up to you .. but either way .. it seems to be a simple issue .. to me.
It depends so much on how supportive your boss and co-workers are and how much stigma there is attached to mental illness.
You don't have to tell your co-workers why you were on leave - something like "I had some health issues myself after ........... 's cancer and caring for him but I'm ready to come back to work now." should suffice if you are asked, by anyone. Keep in mind that Depression is an illness like any physical illness and you wouldn't feel as if you had to give details of a physical illness..
Love WV's alien story!!!
I just hope you're not going back to the same amount of stress in your job, but the antidepressants should help a lot. I've been where you've been almost 5 years ago so feel free to message me if you want to.

I would attribute the absence to the illness of your family member saying you were needed to help in the caretaking. That's honest enough.
It's a volatile job market and employers have no mercy.
Good luck!
I have a friend who makes no response when asked something people should not ask. He just looks at them and says nothing. I have tried it and it works.
