So, I have no job, little money and , now, today, the car engine light came on. I waited a few hours, hoping it was a short, and tried the car again. Nope, it's still there. Although I don't drive a lot due to gas prices, I need my car to get around as the public transportation system around here isn't good. Don't know what I'm going to do.

Do you have family who could help out? Often engine lights go on and it doesn't mean anything. Maybe a computer is going bad or something not so serious. Drive it to an Auto Zone or another parts place and they often can diagnose the problem as long as the engine is running. It may be nothing and as long as the car is still running you may be ok. Check all your fluids -- transmission, power steering, radiator fluid, oil, brakes. etc.

I'm on disability, sold mine not long ago as was getting way to expense to keep running, insurance fuel etc

My cars - the engine light just meant it needs oil. Costs a few dollars for oil compared to replacing the engine so do check the oil.

It could be low oil or it could be something else! If its flashing then you need to get it checked out if its solid then you can go a little while on it. BUT CHECK THE OIL first before running it .

Could just be a MAP sensor or O2 sensor and they are not real critical to your engine right away but they will kill fuel economy.
