My grandfather was scots-irish and methodist, so in his honor I am wearing an orange shirt. Now, this is not to say that I am a unionist. In fact, I hate those bastards! But, enough with the catholic/protestant segregation already.

This year, I am wearing an orange shirt and green kilt to symbolize unity, and I suggest others to do the same!

My dad left Ireland and has never returned apart from for funerals because of the troubles...

So... today I am wearing grey... and saying let's all get along!

When it comes to the irish flag, green stands for the catholic majority in Ireland whereas orange represents the protestant minority (mainly the scots-irish in Northern Ireland).
The white stripe in the middle stands for unity, which sadly has been screwed up due to the troubles.

i wore a black shirt with peace signs floating all over it. And shamrock earings. No orange. No one in my family is irish.

Both my parents are Irish.I am fairly removed from them but know that neither has any plans to return to the country again,they do not have many fond memories of it...I rarely think about being Irish except on st.patrick's day.Love the idea of the orange and green kilt!I wonder if wearing all white on this day would be symbolic in a positive way also?

some history King James the 5th of Scotland became King James the 1st of England, yes that King James. When he did he decided to give a lot of land in Northern Ireland to his Protestant Friends in Scotland. The fact that it was already occupied made little difference to him.

When the Irish and Scots and whoever else immigrated to the colonies in the 16 and 1700s the Scots in Northern Ireland started calling themselves Scots-Irish in order to be distinguished from the lowly Catholic Irish in Southern Ireland. This as you might guess was the start of the Troubles as they been known in Ireland ever since.

I am waiting for April 6th which is officially Scottish Tartan Day in America

Thanks for this Kuno, it's a really different way of looking at today. I'm not Irish; I've just always worn green on this day because (whether it's my mind or it's true) I've always had terrible things happen to me on this day if I DIDN'T wear green. So just to be safe... ;)

BUT I'd like to inform you that colors the University I attend are ORANGE and GREEN (see the profile picture!). Best colors ever. They don't mix artistically, in fact they rather stand out. But either way, I sported them today - and I'm really glad I also helped your cause.
