Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
I lost my dog last July to cancer, as some of you might remember. It was devastating and I got very depressed, but through treatment I got back to "my normal" last month. I've been poking around the rescue sites to adopt a dog and I've seen a few since July and I visited them but decided I wasn't ready. I actually adopted one in September but realized I was too depressed and it was a mistake so I returned the dog. Never thought I'd do something like that.
As I feel better, I feel more ready now, so I found a dog and put in an application, which was approved last week. Fast forward to yesterday, the day before my meeting with the dog, my anxiety was sky high and I was crying furiously about my dog that passed. I did not understand why I feeling so much pain. Today, I had the same anxieties, but I adopted the dog. I feel like I would keep putting off adopting another dog because of the anxiety. Anyway, today was the same with furious crying about my previous dog. I told someone about this and they astutely opined:
"I believe you're crying because by adopting that new dog, you have accepted on another level that the dog you lost isn't coming back."
WOW. I think they probably have hit the target on this. The mind is a mystery. My subconsious mind was coming to that realization, but my conscious mind couldn't figure it out.
I am so exhausted physically and emotionally from the past two days.
Thanks for reading.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

I was in no way ready for a new dog either
I was still grieving my Rascal but she needed a home and I thought I could give her a good home
We fell in love but it took a little time that's all
Now she's my bff ..We've been together 2 years now but still at times I look at Rascal's photo and shed a tear
I look forward to seeing my wonderful dogs in Heaven..
Xo
We cry because we are humans and humans have memories and feelings. So the grief just bubbles up from time to time, the loss stays within our memory but stops being so strong or a big depression. We cry because we are moving forward in our lives and that is a big thing.
And yes, by getting a new dog, you are acknowledging what has happened and how it won't change.
I believe in unusual things. Maybe your old dog brought you to the shelter to get a new dog and is so happy for you? Hugs.
