Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
So, as people may know, I haven't been able to break into tech and I used to teach school. I was on a facebook group where you ask for "Brutally honest advice". The advice they gave there was to return to school teaching as the tech market is really bad, even for experienced people, the logic being that if experienced people are not getting work in tech, neither will I.
I applied for a virtual high school English teacher role, something that I've been interested in and have thought about doing as a direction for my career and have genuinely been excited about. I thought that it would be a good change for me since the issue for me has been problems with classroom behavior. I don't think there is going to be a lot of that in a virtual environment and I would like to work from home at this point in my life, at least hybrid.
I thought the interview was very strange. I've been substitute teaching the past few years, which is a pretty hard grind, and my thought is that if tech really doesn't work, I will resume my former profession. Subbing is not fulltime. And I do like English. The interview starts out with, "Why are you looking for a job now?!" In a pretty aggressive and blunt tone of voice, which I really didn't appreciate. The reason being is that it is hiring season for teachers.
I was ready to answer the question, "Why do you want to work for our company?" But I was not ready for the question that came next. She said, "Why did you apply here if you could just be an internal applicant at your current company?" Honestly it really pissed me off and I didn't like it. You could ask that of any candidate. I said that I was interested in teaching high school, which is a fact. The company that I work for mainly serves elementary, and I am not working fulltime with elementary and junior high. This time I am interested in working remote. I honestly thought they were going to ask about my tech degree, the whole thing was really, really weird.
We got on to some actual academic questions, and then they said they would get back to me after fourth of July, which is a really long way off. I've never had an interview quite like this. I highly doubt I will get this job and am not sure why they called me to begin with. I've had experiences before where the interview was negative and hence, the job was quite toxic after. This is why you really need to interview with a place. I didn't feel motivated to write a thank you note. Any thoughts on this? Perspectives?

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.
You have the qualifications that they're looking for
They may have a number of interviews set up already thus the time frame
Deep breaths
You can continue to look for virtual positions while you wait to hear about this one
I think a lot of people don't come across as warm when they don't know you personally
I hope that it works out well or another online teaching job will...xo
I know it means going to work in the eve but people go because they want to learn so you won't get the nonsense from students
Was that Facebook group specifically for teaching positions? Or, just a general "Brutally honest opinion group" (about anything and everything). Facebook might not be too helpful in getting you a job. Unless... there is someone on there that you know, that you could connect with?
I know it is frustrating. You are trying very hard.
Do you know any other teachers or people that work in education? You could reach out to them, people in your profession, and let them know you're looking for work. Networking, basically.... But within your specific profession.
I think networking within your profession would be the most helpful, in my opinion.
And it's tough because this is a holiday week. One thought while you're waiting, and at nights, weekends.... would be to go on YouTube and put in search words like "Interviewing for teaching positions" and "handling tough interview questions".... words like that. I go on YouTube all the time, just for every day stuff that I want help with, or to brush up on new stuff.
Keep trying. You will get a great position soon!
I also had a person who would have been my manager if I wanted the job to ask me why I went back to get my masters at "my age" and wanted to work there. This made me not want to work there which I had actually decided upon attending the interview. The parking situation was bad, the commute bad, and this woman confirmed I would not be happy there is she was showing ageism.
The thing I learned is to stay calm and don't react in anger. Respond thoughtfully. Show how you will do their job, solve their problem.
