This is actually something we learn in relationships when we date someone who has feelings and moods and hints at us, and we don't realise they're hinting because we're used to people talking straight, so we carry on innocent and then they dump us in a vituperative screaming match of how insensitive we are. We go away, hurt and devastated because if we'd known they were upset we would have done something, and how could we know that them looking at the tv with their head on the side meant we'd hurt their feelings?
We go for a few years being ultra sensitive, and picking up on hints with normal people that turn out not to be hints at all, Tiptoeing about, overthinking, oversensitive, screwing ourselves up and exhausting ourselves worrying if they are feeling this, or that, or ....
...so that they think we're neurotic and they dump us...
And then we think 'stuff it. If someone's got a problem with me they can tell me, just like I do with them' and that's where we end up sitting.
So in closing you're never going to get a result from the hinting. Either they don't notice, or they actively resent it. Talk straight to people. It's the only way to function. And I'm pretty sure they can handle it and will give you some genuine attention.
