Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
therapy is a treatment, just like any other.
Would you continue taking a drug for two years if it didn't help?
I agree with the other members who recommend you be fully honest with your therapist. Part of their job is to assess whether or not you are improving. If they can't be of help to you, try someone or something else, like group. There are different styles and philosophies regarding talk therpay, like cognitive vs. behavioral. If one isn't working, another one might.
There are actual ways to measure if therapy, or any other treatment, is working. You can rate yourself with the Beck Depression Index every month or so and see if your depression rating actually goes down. Drug companies use rating scales like Beck's or Hamilton's to prove that a drug is reducing depression. You have every right to bring your ratings up with your therapist. (If they don't know about these rating scales, I would definitely find a new therapist.)
