Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Your therapist is a medical professional. They're not going to hold it against you, or make anything weird out of it. She detected an issue that needed to be dealt with...and maybe, in the long run, saw it as better for you to be aware of it.
You'll certainly be less self-conscious in the future if it's something you can find an answer for!
I have an idea: and it might be just the thing! Simple solution: Get one of those small, dollar store write-on/wipe off boards, and hang it on your bathroom door. Keep track of when you shower/bathe. Write it down every time. (Erase the last one, only keep the LATEST one up.) That way, you won't need to feel self-conscious, or embarrassed like that, ever again. And you can face social situations with more confidence, too.
If our medical people can't express common concerns like this to us, who can? Besides, hygeine is also a health concern. You don't need to be developing skin conditions before someone alerts you to a possible problem, right?
Talking it out, telling her how it all made you feel is much better than fleeing...problems only follow us when we don't face them.
She may have some more effective and helpful ways of getting a handle on this, too.
You also mentioned it's something you don't feel like going through with anyone else...I'd stick with her. Having a therapist who KNOWS you well can be a very precious commodity.
(((Hugs)))
Maybe give her another chance and tell her how hurt you were by what she said.
I like Spiral's suggestion about the write on board that's very practical and doable. I will try it.
As for all of you saying I should talk it out with her- I'm sure you're right. It is hard to push my mind into thinking about going back- but I also know I should. This is not the first time I have thought about never going back to therapy. When I finally come back to myself I can usually see the best thing to do.
Thank you all again.
