switching from Paxil to wellbutrin??

Hi Everyone,
I have been on Paroxetine 37.5 CR for 15 years. It has worked for depression, but the weight gain over the years has been a struggle. A friend suggested that I switch to wellbutrin. I am so afraid of switching meds, but I think I am going to do it. I have prepared myself for this switch by cutting down the Parox. dosage to 25 mg over the last 3 weeks. I feel sort of lightheaded and somewhat agitated...but not too bad. I will see a new doc on Thursday to complete the process.. I'm assuming he will keep me on the paxil while adding the wellbutrin, and then little-by-little begin to cut out the paxil completely.
Has anyone ever done this before? Any thoughts? Any advice or suggestions?

I've been on anti-depressants for 15 years including paxil and wellbutrin. I also seemed to gain weight with Paxil. I honestly can't remember why I stopped taking wellbutrin but I've been on EffexorXR and Prozac as well. My past docs have told me that some just work for better than others for different people so really trying it is the only way you will know. My doctors did the same thing, slowly weening off and then adding the new drug. I've never had a real problem EXCEPT with Effexor XR. It is very powerful and addictive and the withdrawls were painful. I no longer have insurance since losing my job so Prozac is my only real option now. I would much prefer Wellbutrin. I think it will be fine...just give it time to work, at least 6 weeks. I don't think I helped but good luck!!!

Well, I think wellbutrin is a good medication for you to be on since you're worried about weight gain; it often causes weight loss as a side effect. However, I know that wellbutrin is in a completely different antidepressant class than paxil is, so it may affect your depression differently than paxil does. If things don't work out with wellbutrin, maybe ask your doctor if something similar to paxil will help your depression? That's just my suggestion, but your doctor knows better than I do.

I took paxil, and it helped my mood slightly. I didn't have any weight gain from paxil. I also took wellbutrin, and it didn't have any effect. Everyone is different, though.
