Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
My second thought is:
Things like this always hit us harder and become more personal when it's somewhere that we have been. I used to live in New Orleans. I moved away long before Katrina..but....sigh..it's really hard to see a place you have lived and loved go through things that. To see pics of streets you have walked down. Buildings you have been in.
It's hard, but usually time has a way of helping these things fade in our minds again.
To answer a few of those thoughts:
* How long will it take me to overcome this? Honest answer is, I really don't know. What things like this do is force other bad memories that I still haven't been able to come to terms with back to the surface, and each time it feels like it's amplified a little bit more. It came out during the session that safety has become a major concern, in part because I realized if something like the marathon bombing can take place in an area that I thought was safe, it could conceivably happen anywhere. The result has been that I don't feel safe anywhere anymore.
Logically, I get that the odds I'll actually experience something like this again are very long. But emotionally, having experienced a smoke bombing firsthand and narrowly missing other things that are too many and too long to mention here, I've been desensitized enough over the years that I have a level of distrust that only someone who is paranoid would love.
A specialty counselor is in my future, we both conceded, and it looks like a social services worker will likely have to get involved to find something, anything to give me someone face-to-face who can relate. I don't like being alone. I especially hate feeling stuck. But this is where I am right now.
