Sounds Dumb, But I Miss My Dog

When my grandma died in September I drove all the way home for her funeral and gave away my dog to a friend at the same time. It wasn't fair my grandpa had to watch him while I was in another state. My apartment wouldn't allow dogs and it was all I could afford. It was irresponsible of me to get him when I was younger, but I loved him as much as my grandmother. They were both my best friends.


My friend updates me on him, but now that I'm home and have a place that allows pets it kills me that I can't get my dog back. I couldn't ask for him back since he's built a home with a new wonderful family. He's all that held me together over the years. Him and my grandma. I have neither now and it's killing me. My friend sent me a pic of him today updating me and keeping me in the loop on his life still. It just hurts.


i just really feel alone and it hurts to have my two closest things in this world out of my reach. Two of my best friends that I never have access to ever again. And I need them so badly right now. I'm just so heartbroken and it's that feeling like the world is suffocating you, like you're being buried alive as everyone just watches. I need them and it kills me.

I suggest that you talk to your friend about this. Your friend may be willing to swap back, or not. Your dog may want you back, or not.

So have the conversation. You don't have the dog now, and the worst that can happen is that you still won't have the dog.

Please, consider a new dog. Preferably a rescue dog! You can even throw that into the mix, a new dog for your friend and you get yours back.

As an animal lover, I can see both sides. As long as you approach it honestly and without anger (that last one would be hard for me in this situation), you may be surprised over what happens.

I'm sorry you're feeling so bad. You did what you had to do at the time with your dog. I know how much it hurts to long for our four legged best friend. Try to take some comfort in that your buddy does have a good home. I'm sorry about your grandma too. I'm glad your here and reaching out. You're grieving and your feelings of loss are normal.

Thank you all. It would be selfish to try getting my dog back. They have one other dog and two little boys that adore him, so I have to pull it together and do that "if you love something let it go" thing. But support is definitely helpful. I really appreciate your advice and kindness.

Oh, b_happy, I can so understand your feelings of loss. My grandma had/has a special place in my heart and she's been gone for 30 years. I'm glad you have wonderful memories of yours. I love when a grandma memory pops up and I can thank God for giving me such a special one. It was hard at first but the memories are comforting now. As for your dog...I too am a dog lover. I have 2 of them and they are my kids. I understand how hard it must have been to let him go but I think you did the right thing for him and for you...and it sounds like you found a very caring home for him. I love that your friend keeps you updated on him, that's a great friend. I would encourage you to give all the love you have to a "new" dog. So many great dogs can be found at the humane society or a place like that. So many need the love you have to offer...they weren't as fortunate as your dog was when you found him a good home. I'm gonna pray for you as you make this decision, ok?

I know what its like to miss your dog. Your post made me think of mine - I lost him last may. Losing that unconditional love is hell. Maybe its time for a new doggie and a commitment to keep them no matter what!

OK, now it sounds better to get a new dog for yourself. If you are ready. Who knows, you may be able to visit your old dog with your new dog and they may become good friends!

can you skype doggy? Can you go visit and just hug doggy? Your dog's like your child. you can't just give a child away and that's it: you need to visit the doggy and have doggy cuddle you and take care of you for a bit.

Those people (that includes dogs) we love and who love us are what we need when we're down and even if we don't take them away with us, going to see them and having a hug makes a world of difference. Do you have the money for a road trip?

Hi b_happy. Just checking in to see how you're feeling. I was really missing my mom today. I cried at everything! I had a cup of coffee which brought back all of the good memories and great conversations my mom and I had over a cup of coffee. I hope you're holding up okay. You're in my thoughts and prayers ♡
