Drew, if your chest is hurting and you're having trouble breathing it "could" be a panic attack but it might be a good idea to get to the ER just to play it safe. Tell them you think you're having a heart attack, that way they'll evaluate you faster than if you went in saying you think it's a panic attack.
Chest pain and shortness of breath shouldn't be taken lightly.

This kind of news is heartwrenching and I'm ever so sorry this happened to a family member. It's horrific when it happens to anyone but, IMO only, it's more so when it is a family member.
