Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
I have some thoughts but would like to hold them or a bit, let them gel before I can articulate them.
I'll post later.
I struggle with this, myself. Hope there are some more ideas here.
My reply:
I think you are afraid to say the opposite. What if you said, "I'm not saying that you're more perfect than me, but damn everyone is perfect." instead of what you said? How would that make you feel? Would it make you feel selfish? Would it make you feel like a fraud? Or would it simply mean no one is anymore perfect than anyone else.
Granted, you may be speaking of matters such as survival. If so, if you really don't believe you are good at things that accomplish goals for survival, then just keep practicing. Self hatred isn't going to get you there. No one, even the rich ones, are perfect at it. Sometimes, I see some really cocky successful people make really avoidable mistakes. Some seemingly smart and successful people don't know simple math! Really, just keep practicing, and do the best you can. Either way, you are still perfect just as you are. Just as you are in your skin, it is perfect.
Don't be afraid of that. Don't be afraid to shed away the facade of being perfect or stronger or smarter to see what's inside the real you. Because THAT is what's beautiful, just the peace you feel from that will get you far in life. In peace, we are able to think more clearly, understand patience, and react to our environment with better precision. Being at peace is extremely important to accomplish anything in life, and it starts with understanding that whatever you are is enough.
However, while we may all have moments of being this way or that... personality is the parts of that we tend to repeat and reveal most frequently... really we aren't those things any more we are our hair color, skin color or height.
A lot of my self-critical stuff is pretty cruel so I've worked hard on the balancing repertoire that the other posters have talked about but also trying to befriend my ego, move from self-talk to soul-talk and creative express some of the more negative themes. I've seen a number of folks who paint pictures of their illnesses, diseases and other demons. That approach is really fascinating to me....
What would the voice that tells me that I'm stupid look like? Would it be green or yellow? Hairy, smooth or jagged? Would that voice have an odor?
It would be a fun avenue to explore!
Like putting out smoldering fires.
I try to imagine a chalkboard "on my heart" and the statement is written on there.
I evaluate the statement, see how flawed it is and unfair perhaps it's base of origin (whose mouth 8 can hear it coming from), ask myself if a friend would talk to someone that way etc
Then I erase the statement vividly and re-write my new one. It will say something much more balanced and kind. Like I'm struggling getting the ha g of this but I will succeed, Rome wasn't built in a day! Or " yeah, that's me, I'm not the best with mornings, some people aren't morning people and that's Ok. I may change, I may not but I still love myself"
Get the idea?
That self critical voice has as much power as WE give it. This is where the battle of the thoughts is fought. Change that BS to something much more realistic and kinder and balanced.
It takes like 10 positive statements to undo the damage of one harsh one, they say. So you can see how quickly this voice can sink us!
Hypnotherapy is really good for this purpose.
Many mental health professionals recommend it. Many people are surprised at just how much negativity flows through their brains dailey. I think I'm going to put one back on my wrist and wear for a while.
I find mindfulness meditation has really helped me over the past 3 yrs.
