Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Can you elaborate on the "if only it were that easy" part. I"m curious what roadblocks you and others see in the poem above in terms of implementing or putting in practice, some of the suggestions.
You must have gratitude for that which you have been given and what you have.
That simple truth is a key. It does not presuppose that living in a box is great, so you can always desire for better life, house, car, etc but you HAVE to have gratitude for the here and now.
If you don't, the here and now will always depress you.
Crying can be healthy too. Releasing some pent up feelings is a good thing sometime. Just dont' stay in that place too long.
I was sitting in the therapists office and noticed this hole in my sock. As irritating as this is, I just adjusted my socks so my toe wasn't sticking out. I noticed my therapist staring at me and I immediately felt self-conscious that she was looking at my hole in my sock! This is when she showed me something that will change my life. She wrote on the board: Date; Situation; Thought/Belief; Coping and finally challenge. She said, I want to talk about what just happened here. So I asked her why she was staring at me. She said "I was admiring your sweater." So under Situation she wrote "hole in sock". Now she went onto Beliefs/Feelings. This was where it got interesting, at first I "realized" I felt uncomfortable, defended but then realized I felt Lazy, worthless, not able to dress, etc. She asked how I coped with these feelings and I said "I was put on the defense". She then now challenged this "belief" by saying but I wasn't looking at the hole in your sock, but in fact your sweater.
The point is, we tell ourselves things when we don't even realize we are doing it. This exercise is important in every aspect of our lives, even something as insignicant as a hole in the sock.
