on not sleeping, focus on relaxing and resting. You need sleep, and if
you relax enough, hopefully you will go to sleep.

I know that when I lay down to sleep, my brain just will not shut up. So, I trick it. I put my favorite music on low and softly so I can sing along with it. Then my brain is thinking about the song, not all my daily troubles. That is about the only distraction I can think of that works for me. "Experts" also say that drinking a warm cup of milk before bed actually does promote sleepiness. Also no caffeinated drinks after 6 pm. No high sugar foods after 6 or so. Anything that stirs up energy and keeps you awake.
