Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

I'm curious about peoples' opinions on psychological projection. Do you think it is possible to dislike something in someone without it being a reflection of something that you don't like about yourself, as in, 'you spot it you got it'? When I went to a support group on zoom, which exists for people to process things in a safe space, I expressed that I am angry and upset with a friend of ours in our friend group, whose behavior has slowly been pulling the group apart due to her needing to have control over many aspects of things and her negativity. A lot of our friends have complained about it.
One of the ladies said that what we don't like about others is because we have those negative traits. I suppose that could be true. I suppose it also could be true that it is simply possible just not to like something in someone because it's troublesome. I ended up feeling much worse, like I was to blame for our friend group falling apart. This persons' control and general way of dominating things have been a source of stress. If I don't like serial killers because they are awful, is it because of some disowned part of myself? IDK. What do you think about projection, and when is disliking a trait actually projection, or you simply just don't like it? I'm curious to know peoples' thoughts.

I invited Bill to have dinner with me last Sunday. He wasn't willing to drive 7 hours to mid Michigan and teased me with his beautiful ribs!!! So, of course I ate alone and had cedar salmon

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

That is different than disliking someone because they have poor behaviors
Hopefully this lady did not project her thought about you being upset by someone else thinking or making it seem your fault that they are doing those things.
We all have unique likes, dislikes and personality traits. That ABSOLUTELY does not mean that you are everything you dislike. It's just means your personality is different or opposed to someone else's personality trait.
For example: I'm easy annoyed by very loud obnoxious people who never stop talking. Does that mean I'm loud and obnoxious?
No....I'm a very soft spoken social introvert who rarely speaks at all.
I more likely dislike the loud obnoxious personality trait because I grew up with a sibling that exhibited that trait and it impacted me very negatively.
In your case it could be something you dislike because you love your friends and are hurt that this one friend is damaging those relationships and hurting the people you care about.
(Just a thought)
Either way please don't beat yourself up over something this lady said. She clearly doesn't know what she's talking about.
And she knows nothing about the situation with that one woman in your friend group.
Please don't listen to what that woman said. That was an odd thing for her to say, actually.
might be going on. Don't blame yourself
