Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

So, apparently they have now added PMDD to the DSM (http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20352443,00.html).
While it has been a few years now since my last long-lasting episode of depression, I've noticed that I do get into a real funk in the week before my period.. I become emotionally vulnerable and completely malaise. The worst part is that every freaking time it takes me a solid day or two to realize what is going on. I hate having to live like this.
I am fortunate. I've effectively "beat" depression, at least it seems that way. But that I have to go through this for 3-5 days a month is awful. I'm tired of it. And because I've suffered depression previously, every time it hits I'm engulfed by this horrible feeling that this time it's permanent. I don't know what to do.

I have it. I had to go on birth control to deal with it. The kind that limits your period to a few times a year. It's awful, feeling so depressed for no reason other than your hormones are screwing with you.

Have to mention the birth control pill as well. Had noticed that it helped some of my ex partners on a range of of other disorders and beyond erratic behavior around their cycle.

I was on birth control for a long time, but had a shitty Dr. About a year ago who convinced me to switch to a different brand which ended up turning me crazy. I became irritable, irrational, and angry soon after the switch.. Made her switch me back, but even going back to my old brand left me emotionally unstable so I've been off it ever since...

Sorry, hate I can't edit here.... I should say that was before they started taking the birth control pill.

I have PMDD and I am unable to take birth control pills because of a history of blood clots. I also can't take anti-depressants for it because the last time we tried that I ended up in the psych hospital because I was planning to kill myself. I have to just bear it each month and apologize for my behavior after and take Xanax because it always starts with anxiety and they becomes depression.

birth control helps me...i'm on the 3 month pills and it only is a problem occasionally. you might have to try different meds to see what works for you

I also have it and can't take birth control either. I now mark the time on my calendar so I can start looking at my feelings before it is supposed to come. I can usually talk myself out of stuff if I know that my body is "supposed" to go through it.

That's a good idea Yasmin. Thanks.
