Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

My mom is 72 years old, lonely, suffers from untreated mental illness which got worse since my dad died nearly two years ago. I'm the only person that she has left.
My mom never goes out on her own any longer, but the other day she went to Dunkin Donuts on her own and she said she made some new friends. A woman and her friend/boyfriend/whatever. So I'm thinking that's really good for her.
I was there with my mom today and I met this lady and her dude. My mom had complimented her on her shoes and this lady starts going on about how she is going to buy my mom a pair of those shoes and how she would even buy my mom a shirt. Then she goes on asking me what color would I want and asking me my size because she was going to buy me a pair of those shoes and a shirt, too.
She was going on about how she knows God would bring good people into her life and we were good people and she gives gifts to good people. She knew my mom for all of an hour and me for like 2 minutes. So I am thinking what the heck? Who does this??
I'm skeptical by nature so I am thinking this is total BS. Not to mention from what she was saying about herself, I doubt she can afford that. I don't say that to be mean because I certainly couldn't afford it either.
So yeah, I've decided it was a bunch of crap from the start because who decides total strangers are such good people and you are going to buy them things??
I forgot to mention when she found out I clip coupons she says she has some sort of connection to a publisher or whatever and can give me stacks of the coupon books. It's just shady to me she wants to do all these good things without knowing much about us. The whole thing screams too good to be true. Not that I want anything. The thought of anyone, especially strangers trying to shower me with gifts makes me uncomfortable.
The elderly are particularly vulnerable to scam artists and my mom is 72 so I worry about someone trying to scam her. I can't help but wonder if this lady is some kind of scam artist trying to be all BFF with my mom right away? Or is she just a BSer to make herself look like a big shot?
I just have a bad gut feeling about all of this and I would prefer to avoid this lady. But I don't know what to do about my mom and I don't know if I am overreacting or not. My mom is too trusting and will divulge too much info right away (and in my opinion she already has).
Sorry for the long post, but I was wondering what some of you think about the whole thing?

Many of you know Mr K told me to "shut your mouth" in March 2025 when we took a road trip to Alpena Michigan. Since that time, we have had lots of ups and downs but I have never intentionally hurt Mr K in anyway. And when we first started dating in 2024 he let me know, although he is an engineer by degree, he has an extremely low EQ. Overall, he is ok (not off the charts nice like other guys in...

I don't know their last names so I don't know if the police could check them out at this point, but from the information I've gleaned from them, the woman has not made good decisions in life and is more likely experiencing financial problems than financial security.
The more I thought about it last night, the more I became worried. I know my mom gave her our phone number the day I wasn't there. So she could look up our address. My mom also told her my dad is dead. Yesterday she randomly asked if we had cats or dogs and my mom said a cat. So it made me wonder if she was trying to figure out how vulnerable we are. Ugh.
I looked at my Verizon account and I saw she called. So I now have the name and phone number of the guy she lives with. I did some digging online but could not find anything bad about him. At least nothing that is available for free. I also still cannot find her last name to get anything on her. I blocked their number from calling us.
I agree with the others and I don't like the fact that this woman has already tried to call, but good for you for blocking her number so that can't happen again. I do know that scammers more often than not target older people because I would imagine they think they are not only more vulnerable ( or possibly lonely ) but have money. In saying all of that, I wouldn't be overly concerned now that you say your mom is more wary now. I would just be really firm with your mom about being careful when it comes to strangers and to NEVER give them any personal information. I would also encourage her from going to Dunkin Donuts alone since this woman and her ' whoever' may think she will come back. I think everything will be okay, but I definitely think what happened is very odd.
Love and hugs xo
