With lithium you do have to have routine blood tests, usually every quarter, to monitor renal function, but it generally is fine if your Dr. keeps it within the limit and you're on a very low dose.
I used Lithium for 15 years, I've been BiPolar for 29 years, it helped greatly with the BiPolar Depression. Lithium has very few side effects.
