I received a letter today from the "United States Office of Personnel Management" that there was a data breech and my social security number and my personal information were stolen. I became suspicious that this might be a scam because I never heard of them before and I don't know how they would get my information (unless it was from when I worked for the post office years ago).
I googled them and it seems like it is legit. Wikipedia has an entry for them and mentions the data breech.
This letter says they are offering credit monitoring, identity monitoring, identity theft insurance, and identity restoration services for free for three years. The issue for me is they want my information including my social security number to sign up for these services. I guess I'm still afraid it might be a scam and am hesitant in doing so.
I am guessing I am wondering what others think I should do? Should I sign up for these monitoring services since my information has apparently been stolen? The whole thing is overwhelming and scary.

We took advantage of the free service, then when it was time to expire they asked us to enroll for a fee. We dropped the service at that time.

My question here is if they already know your social security number was stolen then wouldn't they already have your number? Why would they want it again?? SCAM!!!! DONT DO IT!!
I would call and ask to speak to someone at the USO of PM and ask about it . Might take awhile to get a live body but I would want to be
sure before i did anything.
I would however make call to the official government office of personnel management as I would want to give it to them only if they really are offering these services for free...did they give you a place to mail your info or ask you to sign up online? I would not sign up online I would either mail the info to them or I would call the general number in Washington DC and ask them to tell you more about how your SSN was stolen....
but to jump in feet first and sign up at some website that came in the mail is bad vibes to me....due diligence is important protocol to follow in giving them the information that is sensitive as SSN is....

Legit. So why would they offer this ... free for 3 years? Because they are making amends for the breach. If this is a government agency/office, they are not in the scamming business.
Yes, they HAVE your SS #. They have everyone's that have one to begin with. Asking you for it is simply procedural.
This is not a scam (based on your post), and being there has been a breach, this offer is something you should (probably) take.

I would not touch this unless I decided to go separately to get myself a monitoring company and their name came up, and with it the exact relevant name and email address.
Find them the hard way but do not reply to the email. Many people steal the identity of companies and pretend to be employees of reputable companies to get your money.
Just remember: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
