OT Finding someone to rent a room

Oaky I lost my job, thought it was going to be temporary, but it looks like it's not. So how do you go about finding a decent person torent a room the whole idea makes me nreves, but I really could use the money I live in a 4 bedroom house any only use 2 of them. So what and how you would go about this. and have you every done it?

craigs list? and make sure you interview them. It would make me nervous too but sometimes we have to do what we have to do.

NO, .. I have never done it. I would think that no matter who it is, ... the potential for problems is huge. Personal habits, late with rent, TV viewing preferences, grocery issues, parking, security, arguing over too cold, too hot, conflict of schedules, personal hygiene, tidiness, their social habits/friends, use of telephone, household supplies, .. it goes on and on. Then there is the issue of a potentially necessary eviction which can be complicated.

I am betting the majority of those arrangements do not work out very well. It would be very lucky to find someone who is just so right, in my opinion.

But my answer was not to your question. If I were to do it, .. interview, interview, interview .. and check references thoroughly. I would even initiate a rental agreement assuming there is such a thing for a "room".

Oooh, yes do interview thoroughly....is there anywhere about a large man who could serve as security for you while you do this? I worry about the criminal element...some just want to case your place and see what there is to steal.

It IS possible to make an arrangement with the right person, but you have to appear confident and "in charge" of the whole process.

No keys until $$ is received, hash everything out right down to the last bill and penny if you can.
Might take a while, but you'll end up with a better class fo renter for your rooms.

I have fround countless roommates through Craigslist.org. Just be specific in your ad, and screen all prospective roommates. They will want to come see the place, and you can take that time to interview them and make sure you are a good match. Since you are the homeowner, draw up a preliminary lease. You can find and print one off the internet. That way, if they decide to not pay you rent, you can take legal action. Do not let anyone move in without signing a lease, even if it is only a very simple one.

You can have them pay a security deposit as well, which is standard for most places. Usually it is equivalent to first & last months' rent. Say you were charging $600 for the room. You would ask for $1200 at move-in. The security deposit would be returned to them upon move out, so long as they fullfill their end of the contract. It serves as a safety net for you in case they don't pay rent and you have to kick them out, or they don't clean their room when they move out, etc. Look around craigslist to see what other people are asking for. Also, try a site like roommates.com that helps match you up with potential roommates based on personality.

Well I house share. it takes getting used to but make sure your upfront about stuff and yeah craigs list might help
