Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

Hello everyone! I am new to this support group but had a question regarding natural supplements that help depression. I recent read an atricle on Focus Nutrition that creatine is one of many supplements to help with depression. Has anyone had any luck with natural remedies? I really do not like taking medicine.

St John's Wort, Rescue Remedy, Kalms and Bach Remedies are some that I've come across. Other persons who have low iron counts are said to be likely to experience depression.. that I can attest to that with regard to myself. I don't know about creatine. If it is coming from an artificial source, I've been told it can remain in your kidneys unprocessed for months and can damage them. That is simply what I've been told, I do not have a data source to back up that claim.

I've used Fish Oil not only along with my antidepressant to help improve my depression but even to maintain good mental health after improving enough to go off of my antidepressants.

Have you considered going to a holistic or integrative healrh doc? Some herbal remedies are dangerous to self prescribe. I know St. John's Wort is one of them. In fact it requires a prescription in European and Scandanavian countries. Your insurance may not cover an IH doc but they will monitor the natural treatments and they focus on holistic treatments before synthetic meds. They also spend more time during an office visit because they're not controlled by Big Pharma. A lot of natural docs have a D.O. instead of M.D. which I think is better. They seem to focus more on the patient and not $$$.

I know you are looking for natural remedies to eat, but lets not forget exercise! It release all kinds of helpful endorphin's and hormones. I've been jogging 3 days a week since February and haven't felt nearly as depressed.

I agree with above comment. I have practiced yoga for years and it is my go-to for release of anxiety. But I used to be a runner and didn't suffer from depression nearly as much. Endorphins massage your brain--can't beat the natural high! You'll have to be patient with yourself and making yourself hit the pavement is the biggest challenge. But once you're there and the more you progress, your body will crave it. Get a running partner or join a running group if you need the accountability.
