Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

I have been attending a series of MH support groups funded by county and hospital services in this area...by in large they have been VERY helpful and very instructive...There are days when there are 2 or 3 groups back to back in which I attend...including a guided meditation group that is held 2 times a week...These groups are peer facilitated and certainly serve there purpose...There are also in house therapist who conduct one on one case services, unfortunately they are available only by an insurance co-pay or if you are on disability and have medicaid...I fall right down the middle and therefore this is not available ,,,as I do not have insurance and I am not eligible for medicaid or on Social Security disability...although that has been suggested that I should apply regardless of my financial eligibility.
Today was a bi-polar support group which I found very helpful,,and in which I shared the nature of my bouts with depression and some of the strategies I have been using to combat these feelings. It also gives me the opportunity to be a bit social out in the community and to find out and tap into resources that I sometimes discover and didn't even consider..If I feel lousy or in a very depressed mood these groups bring me out and if only by the company that is there at the time,,my affect and mood brightens considerably..
Most of the people who go to this place have severe mental health or emotional diagnoses, but there are some with modest mood disorders or milder pyche issues... such as myself,,
If for no other reason it gives me a balance to how I see myself in what I know call a transitional phase of my life...which I am finding terribly difficult and in itself very depressing...it is part of growing older and making to transition from work to either retirement or a less stressful life working ...
I am 61 and I have only recently have come to a place where I can truely accept that situation and positively work with it ....
I still have my swing moods and sometimes they can be pretty severe,,I am not on medication for it...for a number of reasons..so I do the best that I can with the resources that are currently available,,,..
It is going to be an ongoing daily process ,,taking it all one day at a time.

I was wondering, how did you find these resources? Online? I live in a major metropolitan area and I'd like to find some similar groups myself
