Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

In my "normal" life, I have a big problem with emotions. It seems like the only way I can feel anything is through music. I listen to uptempo music to feel "up"; Heavy Metal and Death Metal when I am supposed to feel anger.
It seems I play these a lot more than is good for me. Although in a way they make me feel like I am not alone and someone can relate to me.
Does anyone else use music like this?

Well, .. it beats cutting, alcohol, and/or drugs. Thing is, you may be hiding within music. It is a matter of moderation and balance. If you think something could be out of whack, discuss it with a mental health pro.

I feel you Gomezy3k, I'm pretty sure my love of Radiohead comes from my tendency towards melancholy. Like anything, escape is good in moderation. If this is something you're doing for all emotions/situations it's probably time to research ways to not let external inputs control your emotions. Journaling with CBT have really helped me.

Thanks for the replies. I went though the alcohol and drug thing. And I have never cut myself but I have smashed my fist into walls and door and anything else I could find to hit just so I could feel something. So far lucky I have not hit a person. One shrink I went to told me that I was a Schizoid. Another that I was suffering from RAD (Reactive Attention Disorder). All I know is I have never done well with feelings or of felt anything but anger. That I can feel in spades. IF it wasn't for anger I would feel nothing for anyone or anythings. It all started when I spent my first year of life in an orphanage. When I was adopted my adopted mother used to laugh about how I never cried or smiled and I could stare down adults. She was proud of me because when we went somewhere she could put me in a corner with some baby books and a few toys and I would sit there not moving. I never loved my adopted parents, they were just there, someones who I had to put up with to survive until I could survive on my own. I learned through books, TV, and movies how to act in public and for the most part when I have to deal with people I can usually fake it. Unfortunately there have been some really bad screw ups. When I was 23 my adopted mother kept pushing me into getting a girlfriend and get married. So I met a girl who was 16 and hated living at home. One day she told me she loved me and I figured what the hell, she loves me so why not get married. That was the most miserable 18 years I ever spent. At first she was all cuddly and it drove me nuts because I have a "Personal Space" issue. I did try to keep the marriage going even though I hated it. We ended up with 4 kids, 3 boys and a girl. Unfortunately I was never a parent to them. They were minor annoyances I had to put up with. I finally couldn't take it any more and got a divorce. I have only seen my kids a few times over the years. I probably screwed up their lives to. Life sucks and then you die...

So, ... have any of these doctors offered any treatment for their diagnoses?? It's great to hear what might be wrong .... but if there is no treatment offered, .. might talk to some more doctors. I think the solution lies with the medical profession. Not only do you need reliable diagnosis ... but a treatment plan is needed as well.

I agree with ...Vet; it's very possible that your brain is hardwired this way now and a good prescription can start smoothing it out. Whatever the solution make sure you understand it from your Dr/Therapist/etc.
