Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Age 28 I had 2 homes, had a split at 32 and lost half of what I created (I have let the resentment go). Age 35 I had a reasonable 6 figure salary and was saving $1k a week. Age 37 my parent dies and I decide to take time out to move back around the world home to be near my other parent, spent 3 years travelling the country and just being with her. All seemed fine, age 38 I take a contract which was meant to go permanent, but I got terribly bullied by a 25yo who was trying to make a name for themselves, I told them I didnt want to go permanent but would stay until they had a replacement. In the end they found someone, the next day I get a termination letter due too being ill, I had a doctors letter for 6 days off with the flu, so that was completely illegal. Anyway it put me off my work, Systems Analysis in IT. Made me feel like EVERYONE is out to step on you when all I want to do is help the end users create better systems. By that time I had met my match and we decided to go stay with her parents for a year in Europe, which was a blast.
We get back and my other parent has developed serious illness. At the same time I developed illness myself. So for the last 3 years Ive had no income. Surviving off my understanding partner.
Now I want to go back to designing systems that help people, but Im scared nobody will hire me or I will just get ego driven numb heads again.
At 43 I feel whats the point, I have maybe 17 good years left an at best another 10-15 semi average ones. It depresses me I have nothing to show for my first 40 years and feels too big to start again and its DEPRESSING.
Other people I know say I shouldnt worry so much and plenty people take large chunks of time out for various reasons. But I just get so paranoid from an employers perspective.
The Mrs wants a baby. Also my anxiety around bullying holds me back from the industry as people know people and Im positive my story was made out falsely behind my back, but that could just be paranoia after being out so long.
Help.

You have a very marketable skill, one that will do nothing but get stronger and more in demand. If you think you're a bit rusty take a workshop or a 2 day bootcamp and dust off your skills or pick up some new skills....but don't let you talk yourself out of going to find a job.
I hope that you have great luck in your job search and I hope that you're able to recover your self esteem, and the amount of self worth you have. Don't give up on yourself so quick.
Take care,
Kat
I guess the fortunate thing, in my field its not like programming, its more people skills, technology changes dont effect what I do. Its more I worry what an EMPLOYER will think of me taking time out of work.
I use to be materialistic and lived a VERY chaotic Alcohol driven life. Partying and so. I squandered my money.
I just feel 43 is too old to get back into my work, which I want, because it does make good money and I want that money not for material wants, but for needs, I have a little time left in life to make a baby and to build enough wealth to buy a house, houses are the highest cost per capita in the world in my country, although due for a crash IMO.
I just need some reassurance from you my friends that 43 isnt too old to rejoin IT Business Analysis work, process analysis even would work for me, which I can do blind folded. Ive done everything from Telco to Software Project Management. But Im so scared my 6-7 years out of work have been a career ender :-( And its depressing me badly.
At least you are not like me...I mean pushing sixty up hill after the roll downhill is quite the endeavor.
I know my Hashimotos/thyroid issue leaves me drained, but I have ambition. At times I feel like the Michael Jordn of me and other times I feel Im the drained, unable of me, but at all times I know Im better, and I dont mean that arrogantly. I cant blame this on a violent child hood or my illness, but it does give me ups and downs due to hormone fluctuation.
Is it better I try to lose the weight and steady these hormones before returning to work or just jump on in sick and all? Im worried jumping in, cortisol kills the thyroid and you just have zero cognition. IT needs, demands cognition. But the years are passing.
