Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.
Also you seem to be buying into their low opinion of you. I really hope you can come to realize that they are the sick ones and that you are most probably their superor.
At the root of a lot of scapegoating situations is 'envy' - envy of someone who is a better person - a happier person - a mentally sound person.
Since you have never had a really good relationship with your mother I am puzzled to understand why it is so important to you to have her approval.
What you are going to have to discover is that you can never look out to another person for your approval-- this is always a bad decision. You have clearly stated all the positive things you have accomplished in life. You have to realize for yourself that you are being responsible in life and discover how to be content.
Why do you think you depend so much on her for approval? What is keeping you from letting go?
So I learned to say, when teh anxiety would build 'stop this, it's outside my boundaries and I can't stay if you continue.'
And if she continued I'd get up and leave.
It took her a while, but I had never pushed back in my life. So she had no idea. She had no idea I was seeing in what she was saying the things that I was seeing. She tried to be all naive and 'you're taking me the wrong way' and I learned to say 'no. I'm not. You need to adjust how you talk to me. I'm a grown woman and I will not tolerate being spoken to this way.'
You have to use power phrases, and non negotiable phrases. "outside my boundaries" is a great one, because it's ambiguous, but still a very clear 'no go zone'. Why? none of her business. Let her figure it out.
She will figure it out. They do. But they won't unless you push back. :)
Recriminations and going over old ground is just bad news. It keeps you locked in the past. you need her to change how she treats you now, and going forward. These are future issues. every past event is either a fail or a success, but it just needs to be marked out of ten, screwed up, and thrown in the bin. :)
Of course, I do not know your parents but as a mom I love my daughter dearly and want a good relationship with her. We use to get along wonderful. I am trying to give her space and allow her to find independence from me and to figure out how she wants to live on her own. I am here if she needs me but I don’t force myself on her. I am trying to figure out how to be a mom now, just as she is figuring herself out. So please try to understand that your mom may be experiencing her own issues and she might be trying. Of course, every situation is different.
I agree with you that it is not helping your mental health to be living with your parents.
How old are you? Do you work? Could you look for a roommate situation?
Yes, Parents are suppose to show you love but as so many of the people have stated parents also make a lot of mistakes and many are struggling to deal with issues in life themselves. Unfortunately when people go through divorce most can turn inward trying to heal and also become somewhat self concerned if they begin a new relationship. Also, many don’t make good choices in their 2nd mate because they are not yet whole when they jump into a new marriage. It sounds like a lot of the parent people in your life are not too stable. How is your relationship with your mom if you are alone with her?
You need to find a way to be whole and stand on your own to feet apart from your parents, and before you find a man to love you too. You might find a man while you are in the process of becoming a self-reliant adult but you want to make sure you aren’t turning to a relationship out of need for love or to fill a hole.
We all have the potential to suffer and repeat mistakes if we don’t deal with hurts and issues in our life. I am glad you are already in counseling.
